AMD Radeon HD 6970 and HD 6950 Review Comment Thread

nice review there too.

ok,so in order for the higher clocks not to screw with temps AND noise, it took a month to file some plastic, add the vapor chamber, and prepare the necessary bios? :)

No, the vapor chamber is NOT NEW, it took nVidia 6 months to design it, trust me on the fact you can't engineer, test, and produce a final product in a month, they defenitly had it in the works as long as nVidia.

The delay IMO had NOTHING to do with clocks or the BIOS, or the heatsink. Most likely it was drivers or component supply issues.

how long will it be before we start seeing custom cooled designs of these cards? I was super impressed with the Gigabyte UD series coolers but I have money burning a hole in my pocket right now......... not sure if I can wait.

Finally the Steam survey is somewhat useless in that the majority of people are using cards that are several generations old. Let's face it most of the people are playing valve games which aren't that demanding relatively to more modern games, and even those due to being console ports aren't pushing the boundaries. I honestly doubt the people playing CS, TF2 or even L4D will be rushing out to buy GTX 5xx or HD 6xxx cards. The GTX 4xx series cards are barely a drop in the bucket on the survey (though the HD 5xxx series seems to be more popular).
I guess you have never used steam.... They have more games than any other store and have the most demanding game Metro 2033. Steam doesn't only have Valve games. Steam is also very popular. There are more steam users than xbox live users. It has over 30 million users. I call that a good number for hardware surveys.

I personally am impressed with these cards. They just need to be priced right and they will fly off shelves. Although the temps are a bit high for what I would have expected. The power consumption is also not as good as I would have thought or either that nvidia just did a really good job.

ATI and Nvidia are both really competitive again and thats a good thing.

I have to ask... Why never 1920x1080 instead of 1920x1200? Give us 16:9 users some love <3

It's not a big deal since both resolutions are very close, but I'm always curious why most people stick with 16:10 benchies only. I thought the 1080 desktop resolution was more popular than 1200.

ah, and copy the vapor chamber heatsink as well.

I would like to remind you that this design was out WAY before Nvidia took it. Sapphire use it for AMD card for years now so I wont call it copy since AMD already use it for long.
Next time before saying anything try to get some info.

Well when first 24" monitors came out there was only 1200 and 1080 is a fairly recent as far as monitors go. 1200 is more popular.

I use it all the time, but have you ever looked at the actual numbers for people currently playing games Steam: Game and Player Statistics. CS and CS:S are by far the games with the most users, with TF2 in 4th.

As for 30mil users, the survey isn't based on 30mil, just those that accept to be surveyed. It is likely far less than that.

Finally, Metro 2033 is exactly a popular game with 1453 users currently playing (peaking just under 2k). Obviously that is not total, but it gives you a good idea compared to the other games.

To my thinking: if it plays well at 1920 x 1200, it will pay better at 1080P.

Good review, although not particularly inspiring performance-wise, I must admit.

*Look over at GTX480* "Hear that? Your contract's been extended until 28nm!"
