AMD R9 280X, R9 270X & R7 260X Review Comment Thread

Aren't all the R9 (and R7?) series cards also supported for Mantle? If there is a performance improvement over NVidia for Mantle supported titles it may be another reason to switch.

Thanks for the reviews. Cards perform right around where I thought they would. This seems more like a step to stabilize pricing structure and get rid of the mass of different models that exist within the 7000 generation. I think it does a good job of that. The only card I see as a flop is the 260x. Nvidia has that price bracket in the bag with the recent reduction to the 650Ti boost (as long as market values reflect MSRP). The big change will be with the 290/290x.

That all being said I don't really see any reason to opt for one of these cards over the 7000 given the prices will likely favour clearing out "old" stock and you also get free games. It would be a no brainer to me.

Whats happening at the low end with R7 250/240 etc....any info? I read it was supposed to be a new GPU core, but haven't seen anything recent about it.

EDIT: just posted and saw the above comment. I forgot about mantle. That is a potential point in favour of purchasing the new cards. Time will tell how much of a factor that becomes.

As well as any existing GCN cards...7970/50, 7870/50, etc. All support Mantle.

The info is on page 2 of the R9 270X review. They're both Oland.

Sky, as always, thank you so much for the reviews. I think i look forward to what you write up more than any other site.

Question though that I haven't seemed to get a answer for anywhere.

Will there be a 6gb version of the 290x? If so, is this something that will be months from now, or we might see before the year end?

Great work. I totally agree on the issue of adding True Audio. It would have been a game changing move for AMD.

now if only we got some headphones on the market that support hdmi audio :P

Seems I already have one

Saw the 3D Mark benchmark sale over at steam so downloaded the new tests.
Ran Firestorm on my new card.
And then I noticed I have a really new R9 280X in my rig. Who knew?

Look how Futuremark labelled my HD 7970 -

Hope you can make that out, tis a bit fuzzy, but their system id'd my card as a new R9 280X :)

I did compare my results with others running the HD 7970 on a A10 and seems I am right in the middle of the pack. My first result with everything on default was 5461. OC'd the 7970 to 1050 Mhz and the A10 to 42X from the stock 38X (that is the 'stock OC') and improved to 5712, only a 5% performance boost. Did try it at 44X and the system rebooted on its own, and tried 1100 Mhz and hit another reboot. Have not played at all with the voltage or other settings. I'm a real nob novice at OCing.

I'm going to buy the 3D Mark 11 now while it is still on sale for $6.76. See if it ID's my card correctly.

==============

Bought 3DMark11 and ran that test, and it too identified my HD7970 as a R9 280X. I'm going to let them know of the error of their ways (have you ever noticed how little appreciation you get when you point out the errors?). BTW 3DMark11 = 7183, meh
