Witcher 3 - The Wild Hunt

Played for a couple hours so far and I like it. While controls are "interesting" to say at least you can remap some of them. Sorry you can't remap WASD, that I just don't get. Frankly I don't understand why there is a need to restrict any keys. It certainly is a step backwards that most games have taken as of late. Now that said I also don't think it is a huge deal to be able to play with the controller. I've had one for years and while I don't really like using one for games like this I don't think it is bad thing to have it as an option.

As for graphics I have most everything on high or ultra, but have done none of the file tweaks suggested by Nvidia, and frankly I think it looks pretty damn good. It certainly is pushing my cards though, haven't heard the fans ramp up that much in a long time. Anyways I paid for it and am enjoying it. And will be getting back to it after a food and washroom break.

That really is pathetic IMO for any PC release to require the use of a controller. I'll play (and enjoy) it because I got it for free, but I wouldn't have spent a penny on it otherwise, and will have to seriously consider whether or not I'm interested in the expansion(s).

If you're of the same mindset as I am you probably don't want to hear this but would something like the G13 (Gamepad - G13 Advanced Gameboard - Logitech) allow you to map out the the WASD (and whatever else you needed) keys?

None of the reviewers caught the lack of keymapping on W2 and after the flack they got back then, I really was expecting them to remember it for W3.

From what I've seen of reviews for most games, none of them are lefties or they'd pick up on this kind of thing very fast. But I'm guessing a lot of the reviews are done on consoles so it's never an issue with reviewers.

I'm somewhat ambidextrous with a lot of things (self-defense sometimes) but prefer left handed mouse use, right on keyboard.

I just posted it in case someone else has to remap a lot, so they don't waste their time and money until it eventually gets patched. And the price drops :biggrin:

Apparently there has been some success in text editing the key bindings file....

I still have half of the last book to go. Refuse to start the game this close to being done reading all the novels...

Played till 1am. Didnt call in sick to work. Probably not going to get to play till later tonight as I have a huge "Honey Do" list that I didnt tackle yesterday because everything was closed.

The game is really good. I'm level 5, killed the Griffin, and moved on to Vizima. I stoped playing at the point you make the 'choices' from Witcher 2, saved, and went to bed.

I'm pissed about the KB/Mouse combo, but I'm going to say screw it and buy an XBOX controller.

Ok so during my playing last night I did run some Fraps to see what I was getting. Here are the results:

10 runs 90 seconds each cover morning, day, sunset, night, slowly walking and running full speed on Roach as well as some fighting. All of this was in the countryside and small villages you start in.

Min 29 fps
Max 64 fps
Average 47 fps

And my settings are as follows:

Ambient Occlusion: HBAO+
Anti-aliasing: Off
Bloom: On
Depth of Field: On
Blur: On
Motion Blur: On
Chromatic Aberration: Off
Sharpening: On
Light Shafts: On
Vignette: On

Vsync: On
Maximum Frames per Second: Unlimited
Resolution: 2560x1440@60Hz
Display Mode: Full Screen
Nvidia Hairworks: On
Number of Background Characters: High
Shadow Quality: Ultra
Terrain Quality: Ultra
Water Quality: Ultra
Grass Density: Ultra
Texture Quality: Ultra
Foliage Visibility Range: Ultra
Detail Quality: Ultra

Also I have the following tweaks done to the user.setting file:

CascadeShadowDistanceScale0=4 (Ultra Value=1)
CascadeShadowDistanceScale1=4 (Ultra Value=1)
CascadeShadowDistanceScale2=3 (Ultra Value=1.5)
CascadeShadowmapSize=4096 (Ultra Value=3072)
CascadeShadowQuality=4 (Ultra Value=1)

And all of this is with my system:
4770K @4400MHz
32GB Ram @1866MHz
Evga 780ti x2 in SLI OC'd Core 1016MHz Mem 1848MHz
Crucial MX100 512GB

So that is how it is. There are some tweaks that I might still play with but I don't want to push framerate down any further.

Edit: Ok so I'm kind of pissed off with this game. Why? Simply because of the lack of description of an option you select when picking a new game. That option is regarding simulating a Witcher 2 save. I knew that if you didn't import a save you would get a chance to answer questions about the past to sort out how you did things. Even though I have saves I figured it would be just as easy to do it this way. But then you get that question about simulating the Witcher 2 save. Since I didn't want it to simulate one for me I picked no. Now that was a mistake and a mistake you don't know about until much later into the game, at least a few hours. So I get to the point when it should ask me for the choices and nothing I get no choices. This is when I find out that by selecting No to that question at the beginning it just uses what CDPR has decided as the base decisions. Frankly I'm torn, do I keep playing or do I start over? What I really want is some way to edit a file or something and have it force those questions. So frustrating, all because they didn't explain what the simulate option does exactly.

I'm torn on this. I already own a logitech controller that I picked up when I was thinking of having a gaming PC in the livingroom (those plans changed), but a part of me dies inside when I think of giving in to consolitus.

Went so far as to sign up to metacritic to voice my displeasure with the controls. At best I'd give it a 7/10 based on the controls and AFAIC any PC reviewer who does a review based on controller play should be forced to turn in his press pass.

Edit: On a positive note, it's refreshing to play a game that the language police haven't censored. Having an NPC tell me to F Off is a big part of why I'm interested in continuing in spite of the clunky controls.

On my honour, I have finally finished the novel Saga that is the Witcher. Those of you who have read The Lady of the Lake understand my little joke.
