The NVIDIA GTX 1080 Review - Comment Thread

Still working on it. I had a bunch of questions that needed to be answered before posting.

Just gave the article a quick go through. I'll have to take some time and read through the SLI changes and memory sections when I've got more time. So far though, wow, that's a really impressive jump from the last gen. I was kind of expecting nvidia to throttle it back a touch and have a more intel 'minimal gains' approach, but am glad to see they don't seemed to have tick-tock'd the situation. Admittedly, this is a pretty substantial die shrink so it's not an apples-apples situation in performance gains between intel and nvidia.

I'll probably hold off on getting one until the fall since I won't have time to game much in the near future (and in the summer, I may as well enjoy doing summer-y things), hopefully the TI will be on the horizon by then :D

Now the real curiousity will be how AMD ends up responding and if they're going to have a product that can really compete or if they'll look to capture a lower price/performance bracket.

If maxwell had been on 20nm then pascal would look like a tick tock no? With that in mind the performance increase we are seeing is about in line, correct?

There is no Tick / Tock in the GPU world. ;)

What about GF100/GF110 as an example? I'd say that fell under a Tick/Tock refresh cycle especially considering the gains from GF100 versus GT200 and then the smaller gains on GF110 versus the GF100 base. How would you also define a Tick/Tock for GPU's?

First off, thanks for the very in-depth review. Well done.

Hmmm, well damn. Part of me was almost hoping that they wouldn't be so good, but now I'm sure I will get one. While I always wanted to move to the 980ti, it just wasn't enough of a jump from the 780ti SLI setup I have. But this finally looks like a decent jump. I'm thinking that this should give me about 35-45% improvement, depending on game.

Even though I should be able to get at least a little bit back from selling one of my 780ti's (one is going to my son) the price is a little high. Well I expected the $599, but the $699 "Founders" card does annoy me a bit. I really wanted one of these right away but now I think I will have to wait. Also with this kind of pricing, if you look in the past with EVGA that $100 premium is usually reserved for the classified/hydro models. Because of that I am really wondering how this will all workout with regards to pricing.

Come on Evga, I want a superclocked ACX version, or something like that anyways, just bring it in under that $699 mark.

I don't define it at all for the GPU world since they've been stuck at 28nm for an eternity. :thumb:

Holy hell this cards a beast. Lets hope us Canadians dont get gouged on the price.

Well Canada Computers already has it at about $999 (before taxes) for a pre-order which I am assuming is the Founders Edition and the 1070 for $799 (before taxes).
