Fans spin for 1 second then stop, no boot

Yeah CMOS battery is one of those things that you always tell people to check as part of the list of things but never assume it is going to actually do anything!

It seems to be a lot more common these days that it actually fixes something. Not sure if that's 'cause they're using cheaparse batteries these day or if there's something about how the bios has to interact with hardware.

Used to be the biggest issue was that it would cause a motherboard to double boot every time because it wouldn't keep the memory profile.

My thoughts exactly, which is why I never even considered it. I had a computer with a dead motherboard battery and the only thing it caused was that it never remembered bios settings. So I had to reconfigure them on each boot. And even then, it mainly only prevented OS boot if my HDD was configured to AHCI instead of legacy IDE. I don't know if these new issues are something to do with how the UEFI BIOS works or not, but I'd be interested to find out. But I'll definitely be taking note of this in the future when dealing with failing POST issues.

I think the new bios's we see on the higher end motherboards might actually draw more power? I know a friend of mine had a computer that basically sat off for 2 years and it was about 2 years old. When he fired it up for the 1st time stupid stuff like fans and no boot started happening and everyone was convinced it was the mobo when it was in fact a 2 dollar battery.

I don't know what's going on because now the computer is acting up again. It was working fine for the past couple days. Went for a hike this afternoon and the exact same thing. Is it possible it burned through the battery already?

It wasn't even a cheap battery I went with Energizer.

Check the battery with a Greenlee power tedger?

I don't have one. I'm just going to grab another battery.

But I'm thinking something else has to be the issue. Possibly the power supply? The reason I suspect PSU is because I had already had to replace this one 2 years ago. It's a small silverstone modular unit that fits in the bitfenix prodigy. What else could be causing it?

I notice the green indicator light on my gpu stays on even when the computer is shut down. Only when I flip the switch on the back of the PSU will it shut off. Is this normal? Could it be possible something is drawing power while the computer is off causing the battery to drain?

Replaced the battery again and it didn't work. Looks like I'll have to try a new PSU on payday. It's gotta be the problem. and if it is I am never buying another Silverstone product in my life. :censored:
