It's supposed to be a prequel to the first one. It's still in development but there's a cinematic trailer out and also some pre-alpha footage. From what I've seen the game looks amazing. Anyone else excited for this ?

Looks sick mate. I've always been interested in space exploration games, and after playing through Mass Effect: Andromeda (which I thoroughly enjoyed despite the controversy) at my brother's I've been looking for such a game to play. Thanks for informing OP.

I've never played the Mass Effect series. If I had to, could I just start from Mass Effect Andromeda or would I have to play the first 3 games to make any sense of it ?

1 is getting a little long in the tooth, but ME2/ME3 are epic. Andromeda not so much.
That said ME;A is a separate story set in a different galaxy 600 years in the future from the original trilogy.

The original trilogy is different from ME: Andromeda (and any possible, future games), in that you fight a different war, in the Milky Way galaxy (that's about as much of the story you'll get from me - I won't spoil one of the best storytelling experiences for you).

ME: A is about the struggle of humanity and the other Milky Way races to find a viable home in the Andromeda galaxy. It's significantly more open world than the earlier games (5 planets - sandboxes of these, 1 space station, 1 city, 1 fragment of planetary debris). The gameplay is also much more enhanced, with jumpjets to climb over things, hover, etc. The game has a bit of crafting, with upgrades and add-ons for your weapons, and as in the earlier games, your character is customisable. You get a few more alien species, some friendly, some hostile.

The lore for the games builds deeply from the original trilogy, though. If you want to enjoy a masterpiece of a story, play the first three games plus DLCs (this is especially important for ME3). Otherwise, it shouldn't be a problem if you decide to skip those. I myself didn't play ME1, and I had no issues. Just refer to the in-game Codex if you decide to skip on some games.

ME2 and ME3 are seriously the best games I've played to date. Especially ME3, because of the Citadel and Omega DLCs.

About Andromeda, I'd give it a chance, tbh. It is (hopefully) the beginning of a new trilogy, and it would only be fair to compare it to ME 1, the first game of ITS trilogy. Moreover, the game got much better after the patch.

It wasn't at all a bad game, just badly managed ***glares at EA***

All right. I guess I'll try Mass Effect 2 first, then decide if I want to try the others. It's available on steam but Mass Effect 3 isn't. Strange.

ME 3 was published after EA took full reigns on BioWare so it became an Origin only game.

ME1 is worth a playthrough storywise. And you get the added perk of being able to make minor changes to characters in side-quests later in 2/3 depending on how you resolved their quests. As mentioned above, it is showing its age though.

I'd say give it a go and see if you can enjoy it still. ME2/3 are superior in terms of playability, but ME1's villain was fantastic.

Personally, I'd recommend starting with the first one as it really sets the stage for the "encyclopedic universe" Bioware created, especially if you're a lore junky.

That being said, it will feel dated and there definitely are some annoyances by today's standards, but I'd say it's worth completing the main quest and do some exploring, especially in the Citadel, since most NPCs you can interact with will fill you up on the lore.

Oh yeah. I guess no new EA games will be available on steam then.

I'll have to try ME1 now. I'm a sucker for a great villain. Vaas from Far Cry 3, Glados and Wheatley from portal, Handsome Jack from Borderlands. I've just always like villains more than Heroes :haha:

Mass Effect Collection on steam is just a few $'s more than just Mass Effect 2 Digital Deluxe Edition so I'll just get them both.
