I need to get a new Router for my apartment and I just need it so someone else can have wiki so they can surf the net and watch youtube video's,I don't need it at all for my personal needs because my tower is hard wired into the router.

The problem I have been having with routers lately like ones made by DLink and Linksys that you depend on lasting for a long back in the day,I find now that most routers last 2 to 3 years and they are pooched.

I'm also sick of seeing most at a $200 plus price point,I'd like to get something for 59 to 89 bucks that will last because I don't need ultimate speed out of it because surfing the net doesn't need jack.

What do you guys think of this TPLink, what brands do you guys last the longest.

you can't find 'good' WiFi routers for less than $200 nowadays. the bleed over of enterprise level networking tech into the consumer world makes for expensive routers. the 'cheap' stuff under delivers and dies young because it can't handle today's usage metrics...and it sucks.

that said, Dong Knows Best is a review site I like to use...he's quite unbias in his reports. I would look at what he suggests for budget solutions and see if you can live with the cons.

I don't touch TPLink anymore. I just can't deal with their UI and lack of flexibility + I can't install 3rd party firmware on them. Asus seem to be hit and miss. Ubiquiti seem to be overhyped.

Thanks I will check that out for sure.

For the $60-90 price point... who's your ISP? They should provide a WiFi 6/6E modem/router these days. I would call and ask or look at switching providers.

Thats why I said screw it all and picked up a UDM-Pro. I couldn't find stuff I was happy with. That said for an apartment your provided router should be good enough usually not like you need to broadcast to cover the whole building and a new UDM-pro would be ridiculous for that usage (a used one maybe not as silly but still expensive)

ASUS branded routers however are the ones I was getting good value out of. For example under $100 for wifi6

if your ISP does provide a modem router and you want good WiFi, you would consider disabling it's WiFi and buying a decent access point or two, depending on the size of your place. you would need to get a small PoE switch, but the basic unmanaged 1Gb one's aren't expensive.

edit - also, Izzy is spot on...their WiFi 6 routers have probably started to drop in price due to 6E and WiFi 7. just cross-reference Dong's recommendations and look up some reviews from others to corroborate it's the real deal.

+1 on speaking to your ISP. I'm not usually pushing that direction, but for your price point anything you buy isn't going to be an improvement on the ISP provided hardware. And in most cases, I believe ISP provided hardware DOES allow you to remote in and set up a basic guest SSID.

If all you're looking for is more control, I have an old DLink DIR-880L you could have for the cost of shipping. But I haven't even plugged that in to test it in a couple years at least, so I'm only guessing it's still functional? And I'd say the only way that's worth it would be to flash it with DD-WRT or Tomato. Even then, it's pretty old hardware. (EOL in 2020 it looks like)

I'd say absolutely No to anything Asus- I've had too many nightmares either their stuff.

Do you need wireless? It doesn't have to be all-in-one.

I personally use an old PC as a Pfsense router and connect it to a zylex wireless access point. Complicated to set up, but definitely not expensive.

I'd say Asus is very good. I've used Asus routers for a very long time and never had any issues. I went from Asus to Unifi and back again. I'm using a GT-AX11000 pro. I also tried pfsense, and while it's a neat little os, it added no benefit to me. I would also say that the Telus home hub worked fine as well.
