The Happy thread!

Got my Emma Hybrid Premium mattress dropped off at the front door today. Thing was 140lbs according to the UPS shipping info. I solo'd it through the house and up the stairs.

The mattress I'm indifferent on until it off-gases. All the working out paying off and being able to strong man it up a flight of stairs, now that's happy thread material :ROFLMAO:

Shouldn't normally be happy about a gas bill ... and i'm not happy with the bill itself of course but I'm happy with the improvement.

This fall I spent a lot of effort in the attic upping it from R12 to r40-60 depending on the section of roof. Out of curiosity just compared October 2023 vs October 2024 gas usage and it was a reduction of 7.38Gj -> 5.67Gj. Water usage was near identical so gas used to heat water wouldn't be that different. Without getting nerdy about the temperature differences between the 2 months I'll happily accept a 23% reduction in gas usage.

Now the reality check is that the difference in gas usage after all the other fees is only a $15 or so total improvement on the final bill for the gas section. Considering what cost me around if i see a $15/mo for 5 months out of the year (october - feburary readings) will still take years to re-coup the cost of doing it even having done all the work myself. I do hope i see a larger difference in the coming months.

In a world where I made a whole lot more money, I'd would consider doing exterior insulation on the house as my walls are just 2x4. But realistically I spent maybe $700 a year to heat the house. Wouldn't break even for a decade or more.

I will evaluate it when I go do the siding. 1970s so also a 2x4 house and still cedar sided even. So eventually I do need to redo the siding at some level (or restain at a minimum). But the cost vs return as well might make it impractical.
