Are you going to use any Mac specific app or like my sister that's forced to use Mac because all the print houses uses Mac version of Adobe and Windows version doesn't have the same fonts? If not, then why bother with a mac? There are 8000 series AMD mini PC for the same price and just install Linux.

I don't know if this is still the case, but I worked on Macs back in my technician days and I remember you could seamlessly boot from external storage. Back then they were still using HDDs, I loaded the OS onto the external SSD and used the internal HDD as extra storage.

If you can do the same now, just leave an SSD plugged in the back as your main drive and use the internal 256GB as extra storage, or vice versa.

Are you sure the same instruction sets are available for NVMe's used over USB? For example would TRIM still work?

For the first time ever, I actually agree that a new apple product offers good value.

That said, it still carries caveats. The biggest of which is that as soon as you tick any of the option boxes, the value is gone (not to say it isn't a good product then, but the value context is gone). And if you specifically need more ram or storage for your use case, that value card needs to be evaluated after you consider the extra $ requirements.

I would suspect most of us would opt for a PC to get more RAM and storage, and have the option to upgrade, but as just a general use box for a non-tech savy person (or even if they are), I think you would be hard pressed to get anything better for the form-factor/cost/longevity/power consumption/silence.

To add to my previous post context, for the M4 (non-pro) versions you have the following options:

$669 - 16gb memory and 256gb storage
$919 - 16gb memory and 512gb storage ($250 upcharge to get 256gb more storage!!!)
$1169 - 24gb memory and 512gb storage ($250 upcharge to add 8gb memory!!!)

It does look tempting, but 256GB storage is really sad...

I have Beelink SER8 8845HS 64GB DDR5-5600 and 2TB NVMe... Runs pretty good I must say.
Maybe, but it's easy enough to use an external ssd.

But also, this is my Windows 11 machine, a year old install, and I barely use any storage anyway. Because everything I have is on my UNRAID server.
