Aftermarket cooling for HD5870 Ref. Design

Really that bad on the vrms? I read a review where a guy didn't put them on. I'll keep my eye on this. Canada computers just got this in for $55 and it's local for me. Still on the fence. My vrms are about 75C on the stock cooler.

Wish I had the vapor-x, agreed!
 
With the AC Xtreme5870, some users mentioned VRM temps of 100+ degrees celsius. I JUST ASSUME that it doesn't help OCing.
You assume correctly. Though the MOSFETs can handle high temperatures, their electrical properties are very heat-sensitive and will derate considerably at high temperatures.

I'm pretty sure that if you read again, it'll say that he didn't put the MEMORY heatsinks on. In that case, it might be OK if the RAM is not OCed.
BUT, the VRMs, Voltage Regulation Modules is a different thing altogether.....those NEED to be cooled for sure...
At manual controlled speed of 35% on my stock 5870, I get max temps of 54 celsius on the VRMs (3 or 4 VDDC readings in GPU-z) while gaming in BC2 for whatever duration of the gaming session. It's pretty good. The Accelero is know to let the VRM temp reach 100 degrees celsius or more.

If the Accelero's VRM sink is undersized/underrated, and the VRMs are running warm, who cares how cool the GPU core is...there is still a sub-system on that GFX card that is running pretty warm.

It's a sad situation...I DON'T understand how in the hell AC could have overlooked such detail, with experience on lots of Accelero coolers. They did the GTX-series (GTX 260, 275 and 285), the one for the 4870X2, the HD5970 model...plus the twin turbo, and all that JAZZ...
I guess their engineers are high on crack. (sorry, it's the ony explanation I can figure out)

I'd definitely recommend this cooler as the temps are fantastic and it allows you to overclock pretty much as high as your card can go while still having load temps 20-30C below what stock gets you. For a 5870 it's a big question, the cooler costs a sizable chunk of the card itself I'd only get one if you absolutely had to have the best air cooling temps.

My suggestion would be to compare your temps to others with this heatsink, if you already haven't. I'm just taking a look around now to see if I can find any on some other forums. Maybe it isn't seated right, but that doesn't seem likely. I'll see what I can come up with for answers/solutions.

Well, this is the thing...I haven't installed MY Accelero yet, in the light of what people are experiencing. Especially the fact that the thermal tape provided for the RAM sinks is NOT sticky at all. I double-checked mines and no it DOESN'T stick at all.
I have to find thermal tape prior to even consider taking the stock cooler off.

There is a 92mm fan hiding under the main power cable that blow's air over my GFX board, this setup keep's temp's under 70c on core and under 75c on the VRM's after a 45min Furmark @ 900/1250 while maintaining almost silent operation. The Scythe GT fan's are some of the quitest fan's i have ever encountered :thumb:

The thermal tape used by Swiftech & Enzotech for their RAM/mosfet sink's is the best thermal tape i have ever come across, 3m 8815 or something like that?

Nice setup!

Well, it's an Asus HD5870 V2 right? It doesn't have the same components for VRMs if I'm not mistaking. It's like comparing apples to oranges...

Yes it's a V2 but i think they use they same component's, just different placement compared to stock? With the sink's i used for the RAM/mosfet's it doesn't really matter as you can place them as needed :bananafunky:

I had the cooler from a previous card and after running the stocker for a while i decided to spend $30 on a nice new fan & sink's and put it back into service. VERY glad i did :biggrin:
