AMD’s Piledriver architecture has undergone its next evolutionary step: a push to the 5GHz Mark with the new FX-9590 processor.

Unveiled at E3 today, the eight core FX-9590 is the first CPU which is clocked at 5GHz (with Turbo Core) and represents the final hurrah of the Piledriver architecture which will soon be phased out in favor of Steamroller. But what curtain call it is. With the current flagship Vishera FX-8350 processor running at a maximum of 4.2GHz when Turbo is enabled, the 800MHz jump could allow AMD’s latest entry to compete with high end Sandy Bridge-E CPUs.

Is this the one that was rumoured to be priced at close to a grand? I wonder if it will have any overclocking headroom, or if all the headroom has been utilised at the factory. Will they even be 'unlocked' chips?

As far as pricing is concerned, I hope they at least try to keep it competitive with a 4770K. I can't see many people choosing to go this route if it does indeed cost $900 - $1000. Even when overclocked to 5.0Ghz manually, an 8350 just keeps up with an i7, and at a cost of vastly more power consumption and heat output.

Pricing the 5.0Ghz chip at around $350 would make it a true contender in the high end enthusiast desktop marketplace. Price it any higher and they will be competing with SB-E/IB-E.

I'm probably dreaming though. AMD will probably try to take advantage of the 'never before seen factory 5.0Ghz' to price it high.

If past experience is any indication I suspect they'll do the same that they've done with previous almost-EOL lines and pretty much release the same chips only binned tighter which means that there won't be much overhead left.

There's supposed to be some FP unit tweaks which allowed them to bin higher clock speeds much easier. Don't have any more information than that though.

Meh I'm guessing they'll focus more on FM2 since it seems to contain the next-gen technology. AM3+ while still good is pretty much at the end.
