ASUS GTX 970 STRIX OC Review Comment Thread

Hrmmmm.... direct comparisons aren't possible, but going by the figures listed in the initial 780 review it looks like we're sitting at 35%+ compared to my 680. That's significant, but not mind blowing, and since I doubt we'll see too many of these south of $400 it's only a $100 savings over that 680.

I dunno... I was expecting a bit more considering this is two full generations.

Pricing on these is a step in the right direction, but it really only shines when compared to the stupidly high prices we saw for the last generation of cards.

I feel ya here. I'm on a 670 while gaming at 2560x1440, so an upgrade is truly in order. Looking back in time is always rough, but wasnt the old 970 pricepoint in the 250 range, and the high end stuff was 400? I guess inflation is a bitch? Wasnt the 460 a massive performer for a paltry ~200?

I'm probably still going to drop the cash and pick up a 980. In the bench marks it still averages a 10-15% imrpovement over the 970, and although that doesnt justify the 40% increase in price I dont forsee myself upgrading for another 2-3 generations (unless some crazy gtx260-gtx460 stuff happens).

Now, if the second wave of stock would just hit retailers so my grubby hands could get a MSI 980:dots:

I think I have a G1 on the way. I'll have to check through all the emails again.

That's about where I remember it being... top tier (single core) cards sitting somewhere below $500, and the enthusiast performance darlings somewhere below $300. Seems to me I complained about this pricing creep during the 7XX launch as well.... ;)

Awesome review. This and the MSI Gaming card are the ones I'm looking at to replace my 670. Now if there was only stock available.........

Too bad also that there is a $30-$50 price difference from American to Canadian currency for these cards.

Amazing card/GPU. I'm always indecisive, but if I pull the trigger on a 4K/60hz Gsync monitor, I wonder if a single 970 would be suitable for a 35fps minimum target at say "high" settings? I know at ultra it's not likely possible :<

It's not really 2 gens from 680 to 970.. 680 was replaced by 770 which was a refresh at best, the 760 replaced the 670 in a tweak but similar performance and apart from the 780's and 750 being added to the the range / replacing older cards. I would call this 1 gen.. maybe 1.5 (with the introduction of the 110 cores)

Similarly I wouldn't call the Rx rage a new gen... just a re-badge with a couple of expanded cores added to the line-up.

I wouldn't be tempted to change at all if it weren't for the heat / power numbers and even then if I can't cover 90%+ of the costs by selling what I have, I definitely won't be changing.

Also 680 (770) was $449? at release, or was it 549.. can't remember, but 500 has been the top main-stream card price for a while, having the second card of the range significantly beating the top card of the previous gen is very nice.

Compare 670 to 580 or 570 to 480.. bet you won't see as big a difference as this. Price wise I think they were similar too.

Anyone thinking of 1 980 should serriously consider 2x970's IMO.

I wonder how this will impact the pricing structure on AMD cards. I guess there is a brainstorm at AMD Marketing department right now.
