ASUS GTX 980 Matrix Platinum Review Comment Thread

Or you know its an outlier because we don't pull our punches. If it is a steaming turd it gets called a steaming turd. If its over-priced we call it over-priced. If its good...its good. 9 out of 10 reviews out there on any PC part is fluff...Its just how the industry 'works' right now. Welcome to the other 10%.

Sounds more like you have a vested interest in making the ASUS 980 the be-all and end-all of 980s. Thats cool. I have no problems with that POV. I find it odd how people can form such an attachment, but its your hobby too and it takes all kinds. :)

Personally I think its the Apple iPhone of this gen. Overhyped, over-priced, and you can find just as good elsewhere for the same or even less. YMMV

I do get the impression most journalism in this field are rehashed press releases. The reviews here are normally phenomenonal and I don't I've never attached names to reviews, just the hardware canucks brand and I found the strix review in particular subparagraph for the following reason:

1. Carried out review of performance with Asus GPU Tweak after it hard capped at 1400MHz without why or what workarounds were available to the reader.

Dismiss me as trolling new poster, or a butthurt owner, I did my research and am happy with my real world performance . I feel my opinion both as someone who's used the card and backed his opinion with as many other sources as you had patience for should recognized as a user with a valid opinion.

And what part of my insistence that the card belongs in the same league as MSI and Gigabyte offerings do you read me call it the be all end all?

The iPhone comparison belongs to EVGA'S 970 series after acx 1.0 fans, 2.0 fans, new heatsink design of FTW, now newer design of the re-released SSC and soon to be FTW +. I'd love too see someone call them out for the torrent of refreshes whilst they push their step up program. It's a particularly raw deal for Canadians who have to pay to ship across the border than eat their $50 international flat fee to get it back.

You are the only one here demanding everyone else change their opinion on the card. You are the one who demanded Skymtl change his well founded and proven point of view. You are the one who states that anyone who disagrees with your opinion is incorrect. You are the one stamping their feet and threatening to hold their breath unless they get their way. That all pretty much sums up a fanboi / "butthurt owner".

You like the card. Awesome. Which part of "The GTX 980 Matrix has the potential to be one of the most impressive graphics cards on the market when placed into the right hands. It may even be a record setter. However, those “right hands” are few in number and the vast majority of gamers would be better off looking at much less expensive alternatives." do you disagree with? Is it more pricey that the competition....yes. Can a 1%'er push this card a bit further than most...probably. Does that make it perfect for everyone? Nope.

So please, take a deep breath. Then re-read your first comment and see how dickish/fanboi'ish it comes across (maybe get your significant other to read and see what they say). No one knows who you are here, no one cares. You have yet to show your worth and why your opinion matters more than anyone else's.

So please either show some credentials (that equal Skymtls or better), or learn to interact with others in a sane manner (there are plenty of examples of how to question a point made in a review...you failed to even try), or expect some members to mock you and poke you. I may even do it myself as I love watching fanboi's dance like a monkey.

At this point I will simply say enjoy your stay and hope you learn to fit in....or dont, in which case your stay will be shorter but more interesting to watch. ;)

Myself and I'm sure other readers would love a 980 roundup article if you can deliver one. Bash the Strix until it's name is laughed out of the industry for all I care if you feel so strongly about it, so long as it's measured on an even playing field. I'd find it an interesting read for sure given what an about face it is with everything else I've read. I'm sorry I can't put your name on a pedestal over these other websites as the one to rule then all, I for one can't buy it if anything else other than the fact their opinions are jiving with my experience at this time.

Half of this may be a misunderstanding, our talk is about the Strix is what keeps rolling, I have no opinion of the Matrix nor do I pretend too. My words may not carry weight here but maybe you can enjoy a glass of wine while you read through them all at this point as it is starting to get long winded, I really don't have any other way to say that review disappointed me and it's mention in this article is what started sparked my first comment.

No one said to put my or Skymtl's name on a pedestal. All we said is why should we put YOURS on a pedestal. Skymtl laid out exactly how and why he came to his conclusion. Its there in black and white how the conclusion was come to. You have yet to lay our a reasonable reason for why he would be incorrect....besides other peoples opinions which actually lineup pretty well with what Skymtl stated: pricey and only a best match for 1%'ers.

Obviously you are irrational when it comes to this card and cant understand how anyone could consider it anything but the best of the best. Maybe re-read the review and actually think about what Sky' was saying. Should you take Sky's opinion over everyone else's. No. But like any sane person you should take it into consideration...or do you shop Amazon and only read the 5 out of 5 reviews?

If you cant 'get that' well god bless it takes all kinds and enjoy the koolaid (at least you did pick a very good brand to go full retard over).

See. For all the jockeying, our opinions aren't that far off Jesso. Sky even said he was going to try some more exotic methods on this card in the review forum post here.

I'm glad you're happy with your purchase. That is what counts! People tell me the G1 is a better purchase then my 4G. I don't care. I'm a MSI fanboy until they do something to piss me off, then I'll change. I do value your opinion as valid, and I never disputed it. What I DID say is tht I don't feel ASUS has targeted the proper market with what their advertising is.

As AKG said. Don't call a turd gold. This card is marketed as an extreme card, with a LN2 paralleled. That is my beef with it. If people walk in and say 'OMG BEST CARD EVAR' I'm going to say 'are you sure?' I'm not sold this card is any better then any other 980 on the market. Why are you? None of the reviews from other sites rebuke my opinion that it is not.

At the same time, like you said, EVGA has been well below the curve in several fronts. I'd be glad to blade them. And you can probably search the forum and find me belittling them I bet.

No one here ha said this card is bad, in fact I feel it is a good card. However, what has been said is this card does not live up to its marketing hype. Can you dispute that? This isn't a trap, but an honest question. Link me to three above average over clocking articles. I'd take one actually, even on water, with a bios mod. Why? Because that is what ASUS says this card is about.

To Akg, I tried to edit an additional aside in my last comment to clear this up a bit but you may have been typing your response as I posted it.

In summary:

1. I didn't like the way the Strix was reviewed stating a 1400MHz cap when no there source backs that, using afterburner or doing a round up with all of the cards using the same testing method would remedy that.

2. I don't have a Matrix, don't pretend to or have researched enough to argue about it.. Not worth it to me and isn't on my radar, just saw this article and wanted to see the improvements.

3. My "credentials" were all of the Strix reviews I used to base off my purchase. I think I'm being quite fair showing my lowly opinion had some merit.

4. You've called me a dick head and I've gone full retard, I kind of get that if you think I'm bitching about a Matrix... Otherwise come off it man I'm being as polite as I can going back and forth with the odd opinion out, I'm just laying it out as best I can.

To Sagath, well met. You think any talk of ln2 is unfounded and a detriment to the cards value as a whole whereas I just dismissed it without any other thought when I scan product specs. I see what you're saying and it doesn't add value and could have helped the cards bottom line if removed, I got the card on sale and just didn't see it that way.

I think we'll get along fine.

If you dont like the way something has been reviewed why not act like a normal grown ass adult and state what you did not like, why you did not like it, and what could have been done to 'fix' it...in your first post? It works wonders to take this time-tested and proven approach.

I never called you a dickhead. Go re-read my first comment in this thread. I stated that I thought your POV was odd, as you were demanding the Asus 980 be re-reviewed until the conclusion matched your expectations....but you were entitled to such an odd opinion.

In my second posted I stated why I thought you were trolling. I then asked what part of the conclusion you disagreed with. You have yet to even clarify why you think it was "Really the sites most disappointing work"....I can name at least 3 of my own reviews that fall into that category. Skymtl could probably do the same. I doubt this would be one of them.

So "come off it man" and try being polite. This is a great site and we love helping peeps out. But you if you come across as a fanboi, well expect to be treated like one by the members (remember the first one to call you out is not part of the 'staff'). ;)
