Appears to be up and running and my upload is still not quite synchronous going through these new ports so I'm inclined to believe that's an issue with my PC's NIC.

Unifi controller installed, and had absolutely no issues importing the existing network backup.

Only current snag is that the speedtest results aren't being logged... it runs and reports when complete, but it's not keeping a record of tests as they're run. (Which then results in an average reported on the dashboard).

I'll probably just try uninstalling and re-installing it.

Heh, thanks for buying one! Curious to see how you find it for OPNsense, compared to your other system. I'm going to assume the same performance, just a smaller package/lower power consumption? If you have a power meter, that would be a good comparison.

Still haven't committed to buying one for my purposes yet, but I'd want it more so to run containers than a baremetal router.

How do "containers" work? I get the general idea that you can run multiple "discrete" applications independent of each other (Would a Unifi controller instance be considered a "container"?) on a central server but that's mostly just a wild guess based on the little I've seen folks mention using them....

Would the lack of multiple ports be an issue, or do the containered apps just grab a discrete IP (or port)?

As far as the hardware goes... I personally think it's a no-brainer at this kind of pricing ($300 delivered to the door) if it's going to be replacing an older corporate box. From the online reviews I've seen, it looks like the N100 does a good job of media file transcoding, the only downside being that you don't have much storage space so it would have to be referencing external storage.

edit: and damnit..... I don't remember if I turned off wifi & BT in bios.... I'll have to take it offline and boot into bios just to be sure.....

I would think of containers as mini virtual machines, the networking is also all virtualized, so multiple Ethernet ports isn't really necessary.

Doesn't this model support a 2.5" SATA drive too? You could get a 8TB SSD, along with a 4TB NVME.

It does, but I don't think a total of 12TB would meet the storage needs of somebody who downloads all of their content, and I'm not convinced that installing a Sata drive wouldn't affect cooling on the cpu (it installs right over the fan).

Hopefully that comparison link works. Pretty much what I was expecting with the i5 6500 posting slightly better productivity results while the n100 pulls ahead slightly based on better iGPU performance.

I personally think the N100 processor is major overkill for opnsense/pfsense (let alone the N305, or an actual i7), but I'm not sure how big a factor that would be if you wanted to enable IP (as opposed to just ID). It's possible that an i7 processor might be able to greatly reduce the IP bandwidth penalty.
