basically, i want to catalogue & get rid of all the cd's in my living-room.
i'm looking at about 700 cd's and they takeup a fair amount of wall space .

initially i was just thinking along the lines of a external hard drive(1Tb) hooked up to an inexpensive laptop (CMetaphor, i'm eyeballing your Dell :blarg:) and do the transfer that way.
now, without actualy building htpc i'm kinda stuck at how i can then listen to whatever i want to just using laptop. how do i get what's on the harddrive to play through my stereo?
 
Just connect the audio output of your computer to one of the inputs on your receiver. When you do initial testing though make sure both the receiver and computer volume is turned down(put the receiver in standby or select a different input when you plug your computer in though) and slowly turn the volume up on each until you reach a satisfactory level. Personally I like to keep my computer's volume high and the receiver's low because then when I switch to the other inputs the volume of the receiver is just right because I can't turn down the other inputs individually.

As for a cable, that depends on what each device has. Take a look at the back of your receiver and your lappie and find out what you need to look for. Well, that or your user's manuals for each.

what hardware would the laptop need to connect to my receiver Deneon AVR 1500?

i think an Ipod might be limiting. i'm thinking of the wife (who is SOOOOOOOOOOO "anti-tech"). i'm thinking windows media player cause she's familiar with that.

Creative cards output Spdif digital from the top (white) port on the rear.

If you set "bit accurate playback" in the creative control panel and turn the volume of your media player down "almost zero" it outputs a line level out signal which only includes the audio from the media player and doesn't send audio to the computer speakers.

I'm not sure how well the media center part of Vista Home Premium works, but that's the way I'm going with a little E6400 rig I'm currently building.

An old audigy 2NX external USB sound card would do the trick. (Gonna take some hits for pushing creative...... :) ).
 
you can buy a cable that has a headphone jack on one end for the laptop, and an rca cable end on the other, i use that all the time to listen to tunes on my sterio from my laptop
