I don't use them a lot so I honestly don't have a clue.... :)

Any suggestions on a sub $50 set of earbuds I can pick up as a stocking stuffer for my young lad? He hasn't grown out of "bass is better" mentality so if it's extra bassy but questionable on the fidelity that's probably the better choice for him.

I'm doing my own googling, but would appreciate any suggestions.

honestly I have had a couple sets of sony earbuds and for the $ I think they are great. I know there is better out there, but the last set I grabbed was reg $40 or $50 on sale for $25 and they are quite impressive for the price. I have tried 5ish other earbuds <$50 in the last 5 years and they are my favorite.

Costco used to have a twin pack of sony's for somewhere around $30, and that would have been my first choice but they're not carrying them any more.

Audio technika's are good bang for buck had a pair of ATH-CKS55 / 50's and they have plenty of base but not too muddy. Not the best at the top but good for the price.
Take a lil getting used to for feel / fit but I found them quite comfy. If he runs consider something else though cos the funky shape causes some wind noise at times.

Also very very good for the price are SoundMagic E10S

Sorry, definitely IEMs. I detest buds as my ear canal shape doesn't hold them in properly (and I suspect my offspring probably suffer the same issue). :)

So far I'm leaning towards the MA450i as I can source it in Canada and I'm partial to the cloth cables. The Xiaomi Pistons looked really cool, but can only be sourced from hong kong and I'm not sure I trust that to get here on time for Christmas.

Brainwavz M5 from MP4 Nation are great sub $50 IEMs. Great sounding, great build quality, comes with carrying case and lots of ear tips, even a pair of foam tips. MP4 Nation rates them as neutral, but they're definitely on the bassy side of neutral. $44 for the version without microphone. Free worldwide express shipping as well.
