Black screen of death

xentr_thread_starter
Since it only happens every few weeks, I’d start with the simple stuff: try a different power strip or UPS to rule out fluctuations, and maybe reseat your GPU/cables just in case. Also worth checking temps and updating GPU drivers/BIOS if you haven’t already.
Temps are fine, bios updates do not exist for a 3080 to my knowledge. Everything is already the latest driver/bios version.

Total longshot here, but, I had a monitor slowly fail on me, blackscreens etc. I trouble shot the hell out of my components, swapped them out etc. Finally swapped out monitor, problem solved.🙄

100% not the monitor if the VM is inaccessible. There is clearly some level of instability. It is possible vmware had a kernel level error as well when this occured but realVNC did not. Oddly the symptoms are the same each time... VMware accessible, nothing else responsive. I would think if random it would be a bit more sporadic as to what is impaired if it were to be ram.

mine 14900k rig's sudden blackscreen is either the gpu or driver i havent had a issue with the 9950x3D rig.
Quite possible it is some level of instability for the GPU, I perhaps could lower the clockspeeds to see if it eliminates the issue. The card is a good 3-4 years old I believe. 3080 during released has aged a bit, I changed out the fans on it as well.

Odd the issue disappeared I checked the cable not melted plugged it in did some light dusting. Booted up did a ddu from inside windows not safe mode but did the clean and shut down. Pulled the GPU, powered the rig without a GPU, waited 2 mins then shut it down plugged GPU back in made sure cable was snug on all sides used flash like to make sure it was seated powered on installed only the latest driver which was only 1 revision higher then the last one. Set fan speed to where it was 75% made all changes in the old NV control panel because no not using that unstable trash app.

Highest performance chosen, Gysnc on full/windowed full screen 175hz 3440x1440p resolution made sure full Dynamic range chosen instead of default limited.

Ran it through some intense Ark Ascended Alpha Boss Battle's ( Billions of Particles everywhere) it stayed cool and no black screen 1000% Dan speeds outa nowhere and oddly the 80c idle temp went away with the newest driver. Confirmed this with GPUz logging. Sits at 33c on desktop with 100% usage ( Prefer highest performance option in NV control panel)

I'm starting to think it is 14th gen specific, perhaps DDR5 related. Ram issues would explain the lack of errors showing and symptoms. "Some" functional services but other are down... If it happens again I'm install a sensor on my PC to poll diagnostic data and spit it out on another server in realtime to see if its a mem leak or something overflowing RAM usage (even though paging should just baloon).

How do you know the issue vanished? You were able to reproduce the issue? I am unfortunately not able to do so as it is so infrequent nor consistent. I do recall a game running at the very least. I thought it was related to the windows issue causing fatal errors which was patched in win 11 but unfortunately it was not.

my Blackscreen appeared after not using the rig for over a month since i been using th 9950x3D system but i thought i should update the steam games at least which had few hundred gigs. but second i fired up ARK ASA and loaded it 2 mins on the dot it went blank and all 18 fans spun up like it was trying take flight. after i updated the driver before the latest it cacked itself 5 mins into the game and idle temps jumped 35c - 44c (75c - 88c) then i did the above and its been solid ever since even went so far as to sacrifice most of my dinos to a Alpha boss that spits out Trillions of Effects and or particles to really push it didnt budge past 35c-44c during the event and not a single black screen.

Runs flawless, I again stepped away again and come back to a black screen of death.

I'm going to humor myself and disable the screen off portion of my monitors to at least see what is displayed. I do not think the mobo will display any error codes post boot (only during boot) for hardware failure.

Leaning on the 3080 at fault but shocked not a single error is thrown for this...

My car was not charging so it is unlikely the power fluctuations on the circuit and nothing else this morning put any load on the lines... Nor did I notice any flickering of lights etc...

Obnoxious stuff. The only logs show the hard reset and not a damn thing prior.

BUT AT LEAST I SOLVED THAT STUPID CMD BOX POPPING UP EVERY DAY. Apparently google drive updater is not silently executing and simply disabling the task fixed that. In the rare event anyone else has a similar problem try disabling the updater in task sched.

Also if anyone else knows of any windows tools that might capture an error state to analyze that would help. I see no dumps/event ids etc...
