BYD is actively scouting 20 dealership locations across Canada, starting in Toronto, after Ottawa slashed Chinese EV tariffs from 100% to 6.1% in January.

20 dealerships seems ambitious unless it's planned over a fairly decent timeframe (10 years?) as they'll need to build dealerships and service centers, get staff and of course deliver vehicles here. I would imagine they're planning 2-3 in the GTA, another 1-2 in the GVA, Montreal, a couple of Ontario cities (London, Brampton, Hamilton, Ottawa?) and maybe Edmonton and Calgary? Lots of speculation that they're onshoring some manufacturing here to get their numbers beyond the 49K vehicle limit which is shared by other EVs manufactured in China. Tesla, BYD, Chery, and I suspect Ford will move some EV production there as they've already moved some models to Chinese fabrication such as the Nautilus.
 
Makes me think they might take the Mitsubishi approach. Partner with an existing set of dealerships to get the inventory on the ground while in the background they acquire land and start construction.

Although given the perpetual 'Mitsubishi may pull from Canada due to low sales' rumors (which have floated for years though have clearly been proven untrue) let's hope they do better than Mitsubishi did/does :LOL:
 
Short version they killed of a lot of reasons to be excited about anything they make. The only modern Mitsu's I'd considering bringing home are the v6 or PHEV Outlanders. V6 because it didn't adopt the CVT and the PHEV drives better than I expected for the increased weight. And I liked what they used to make.

With that said BYD will be coming in on a fresh slate, but thinking about it they might be able to abuse some opportunities. Lakewood Chevy here in Edmonton is moving further south so that whole building will be empty. Someone like BYD might be able to just gobble opportunities like that and not even have to build anything just send out inventory. Worst case make upgrade electrical to handle charging loads.

Yep, I think Kia/Hyundai did something similar when they started expanding, taking old dealerships and they've been successful with it.
 
Damn Mitsu crap on their legacy! Eclipse Cross!? Where the hell is Lancer EVO?! Where the hell is Parjero EVO!? At least I think BYD will do better than Vinfast, at least got deeper wallet and more experience.
 
Not really interested in Chinese car brands because their after services is pretty bad from what I heard. There's enough horror stories coming out of UK and Aussieland. Sure my friend's Volvo EX30 is technically a Cherry but at least it's the dealer is still Volvo.
 
No idea about reliability/support, but when I visited Aus for work last year there were lots of BYD…and lots of them looked very nice…no experience other than that

Yeah, I have to imagine if they did 1-2 dealerships in the GVA one would end up in Richmond.

Dealer/service experience will definitely factor in, but then again Kia's dealer network is notorious here in Canada for shifty behaviour, skimping on warranties, etc and it doesn't stop most.

I wouldn't buy an early one, but I'll keep an open mind after they've landed for a few years.
