Core i5 750 vs Core 2 duo E8500

Hey guys, I'm planning to buy a new computer and I don't know which one of these CPUs is best for gaming, i5 750 or core 2 dup E8500, (especially FPS like Crysis, CoD4, ...)

Or maybe I could find a more appropriate (intel) processor of the same price?

they are the same price.. and pushing the 750 at 4,0 ghz is a walk in the park.

if you go for a E8xxx, go for the e8400... you will save $ 25 , the 8400 is also easy to push to 4.0 ghz

honestly go for the i5..unless you have already a good 775 board

Do I need a new fan to push it to 4GHz? I'm planning to keep the fan included in the box
 
If you're upgrading.. Don't do it.. those E8400 are still pretty good.. besides a better GPU would show more performance increase in the games you listed.

If you're building a whole new PC.. then yes the 750 is the way to go, you can get yourself a good i5 system for less than $800..Although, if you look around you can build yourself a Core 2 system for almost half the cost, the buy/sell section in this forum, usually has very good deals by users. Actually you might be able to save yourself $$ by getting some of the necessary parts either way you go..

As I said though, brand spankin new!!.. i5 750 is your best bet..

It will be an i5 for me then, and i guess that i'll buy another fan.

To really hit a good oc you'd have to get a new HSF for either, so yeah stick with the i5 imo as well.
 
NCIX has the Coolermaster Hyper something or another for 20$. It's the best bang for your buck CPU cooling ever.
If you buy the core2duo, you'll regret it every day. The nelahem architecture is just too amazing to not have. The price difference isn't all the much either.
 
plus the motherboards are MUCH better than the old 775 boards. The best thing to happen was the option for SLI or Crossfire on the same board. Not to mention you future proof your system a bit because you have a new socket with upgrade paths while if you bought a 775 mobo you have no new cpus coming out.
 
I went with an i5 and its been one of the most satisfying pc purchase since my amd64 939 3200 venice core. Easily got 4.2ghz on air with a cheap vanilla board, will get to see it really shine under water very soon. My only beef is that it appears that i7 860 and 870 with a couple of xeons are going to be the highest end chips for the 1156 platform as far I have been able to tell. Sure they will get die shrinks but thats hardly worth changing out a processor in my opinion.
