(Nearly)Every component of the rig I want to build is sorted. Aside from the RAM, I know I want DDR2 and for quite a while I've been thinking about OCZ's 4gb pc2 8000 reaper x OCZ 4GB PC2-8000 C5 ReaperX HPC Enhanced Bandwidth (2x2GB) - Aria Technology costing £75.14 ($152.34 ). Then right next to it is 4gb of pc2 6400 reaper x at 800 mhz but with lower latency OCZ 4GB PC2-6400 ReaperX HPC Enhanced Bandwidth (2x2GB) - Aria Technology, and it costs £84.54($171.39 . Which one should I get? Bearing in mind mushkins are very hard to get this side of the atlantic, are there any better ones I should get, or even 2gb of very fast ddr2 instead? Finally can my motherbord (asus p5q deluxe) support PC2 8000? Thanks for any help.

Edit: If I get 4gb will I need a 64 bit os?

They're probably exactly the same memory chips, the PC2 8000 have just been tested to run at higher speeds. If it were me, I'd get the higher end ones, IMO 5 dollars a gig for piece of mind is worth it.

As far as "needing" a 64 bit OS for 4 gig goes.......

You don't need it, but a 32 bit OS will not take advantage of the full 4 gig. You'll see somewhere between 3.2 and 3.5 gig being used by the OS which is still a hell of a lot better than only 2.

Personally.... I'm sticking with a 32 bit OS until I get a warm fuzzy feeling about overall 64 bit OS compatability with older apps and games.

Yes, the P5Q should have no problems with that RAM. What CPU are you running, and do you plan on overclocking it? If it's a dual-core(especially Wolfdale), then definitely get the PC2-8000...if it's a quad, then high FSB's aren't as likely and you could get away with the 6400. Actually, i'd say in either case, get the 8000..it's cheaper.. and rated for 1000MHz. Timings aren't as important as RAM-speed...though in all likelyhood, both sets will probably perform very similarly. GL

Good attention to detail!!! I missed that and assumed that the more expensive stuff was the PC2 8000. (That's what happens when you post at 6 AM on a Sunday... :) ).

Yeah, go for the PC2 8000. :)

I recently built a new pc and I only had 1 problem with my 4 gigs. The problem came with vista install, it wouldn't install with all 4 gigs so I took one stick out and it installed fine. I then put the second stick in and have had no problems since using just a 32 bit OS Vista. Vista seems to see all 4 gigs. In the system settings and in CPU-Z and all the other system analyzers they all show 4 gigs, I assume that means that 4 gigs is being used by vista. Can someone confirm this?

Hey Jupiter not for me bud, go into your system panel and see yer computer info it shows as 3327Mbs for me. I dont get the full 4gbs but then again i need 64 bit to get 4gbs.
