Retroarch is readily available for mobile and the easiest to 'set up multiple systems quickly' and will likely have mobile ports of some of the better cores (bsnes/higan for snes for example) , otherwise there's tons of decent emulators for most popular systems. Anything 32 bit or below will run on basically any mobile phone, though some hacks will be enabled for specific systems or games
Emulation is actually quite brutal for some systems. N64 being an example of something that will bring an overclocked 8gb rpi4 to near slide show frame rates for some games. Where genesis (sega cd, 32x as well), SNES, and Gameboy/game gear stuff will be fine. Anything more than that cN be hit and miss.
N64 emulation is in a pretty rough state compared to most systems and some of the major emulators rely on plugins and hacks to get working to varying degrees of success. I haven't tested mobile, but it's probably very 'depends on the game and the plugin/settings'.

MVG did a video a little while ago on some upcoming changes to N64 emulation, with some non-plugin stuff in the works IIRC but I only skimmed the video.

it's crazy how many options for retro handhelds now...Anbernic is a dominator in that space for the low to low-mid-end products with Retroid dominating full mid-level space, and they all excel at what they do. I've been watching a lot of retro gaming corps lately...thinking of getting an RG35XXSP for my 5-year-old grandson and maybe the Retroid Pocket 5 for my 10-year-old grandson. not sure my granddaughter would much like one of these as she's more artsy fartsy, but she loves pink and some of them come in pink and being inexpensive, doesn't hurt to try....I guess. ;)

Retro Game Corps has a great YouTube channel you should check out. He covers emulation on every device imaginable in excellent detail.

I ended up going a different way than expected regarding retro gaming. I bought a GameSir X2s controller for Android to plug my LG Velvet 5G into, now that it's surplus to my needs. it should arrive by Friday, so we'll see how that goes.
