When my old Startech virtual iso died last december, I ordered the IODD ST300.

I use it with a cheap 256gb ssd, and it's a wonderful tool!

I had some problems with Ventoy on my external nvme and some recent uefi systems, but the IODD ST300 works everytime.

I recommend!

I still need to test the virtual hard drive function.

If I understand well, it can emulate an usb hard drive from a vhd file (boot a whole linux system from vhd).

That's one of those extra features that sold me, beyond replacing a bunch of USB keys. With VHDs I can bring a Full OS to any PC, even if it *Doesn't* have UEFI (because it fully emulates a native CD or HDD drive), for whatever purposes I need. Could have a ln installed Win11 image full of hardware testing apps to stress test builds, without having to install windows and apps individually (or with Ninite.com, still a fantastic site & tool btw). Dam good idea! Like I said, it took only a few seconds for me to be totally sold on it, a second more to press "buy it now" haha.

how do you setup a virtual drive? if I recall correctly from an article I read in the last couple of months, using one of these is a replacement to using VM's. right or wrong?

From what I read, you need to create an empty vhd file from their software (or maybe bring your own), and then load it the same as you do with isos from the menu.

Then you can install to or boot from, like a usb hdd.

Well, that test was fast and easy.

I already had a virtualbox machine with LinuxMint 22.

Cloned the vdi hard drive to vhd from the virtualbox menu, copied that vhd file to the iodd st300, and loaded the file from the lcd menu.

Rebooted my computer, asked my uefi boot menu and selected the new iodd vhdd line.

It just... worked. 🤯

from what you say here, it sounds like the virtual drive can load itself from start without the need to boot off your existing / primary OS like a virtual machine?

Yes, the VHD is loaded from the UEFI boot menu, like any bootable usb flash drive.

No need to boot the primary os. It's a usb hard drive / flash drive / floppy emulator.
