That's because this fact was revealed in the S6 finale when Bran sees Ned take his sister's baby (Jon).

The TV show has been good from the start, but I've definitely been enjoying it more since it moved past the books.

That's not what Lowfat was talking about, Gilly was mentioning about the legitimate marriage between John's father and mother making him NOT a bastard. Without this piece of information, he's still a bastard, born out of wedlock.
