GN 12VHPWR cable failure analysis

That was the problem though.... he didn't say a bloody thing about performance (because these dells would perform as well as any other similarly spec'd non-proprietary system). His whole focus was on the fact that the parts were proprietary (truth be told... the proprietary PSU is probably higher spec'd and more robustly built than a standard 500W PSU would have been).

Throw in several other bits with him dramatically faking his discovery of yet another proprietary part (he looked like one of those snake oil salesmen fumbling with something on made-for-tv ads) and he put himself on my do-not-view list.

If it had been an earlier version of the Dell that had major problems with airflow and he focused on that I would have applauded him. Instead he went on a rant because a proprietary system included proprietary parts without tying that in any way to performance / suitability issues.

Exactly.
This was a pre-built designed for Entry Level gaming. For kids. People who play Fortnite/LoL ect ect. Not those who have a propensity to Tinker on a build.
If you Tinker, you tend to build your own. So knocking it for being a fixed configuration or limited one was absolutely off base and dishonest.
He was viewing it through the Lens of an Enthusiast vs the Lens of a 13 year old who just got it for their BDay and can finally play those games with his friends.

It was, idiotic.

Edit - Also, you are right on the Power supply. Dell uses almost exclusively Delta for the PSU's.

I think we have also reached the era where pre-builts shouldn't be using proprietary hardware anymore outside of special form factors. Locking customers into your support channels in that fashion because literally the only way to get a replacement parts is to wait a week for Dell to respond, deal with shipping etc is long gone and no longer acceptable even for entry-level pre-builts. View that more as an anti-right to repair move than I do anything else.

Edit: In general what some of the these pre-builts are getting away with feels almost criminal. Brother in-law purchased some pre-built already forgot the model. Right on the box "3200Mhz ram" speced right one the box in bright lettering... however the garabge tier motherboard that was included capped out at 2333Mhz so running at 2333/CL 22 out of the box but nothing of that limitation written anywhere. Insult to injury crashed all the time until I uninstalled their bloatware.

But this model is very much a non-standard form factor (it's exceptionally short) and both the proprietary PSU and proprietary motherboard (the rear panel extends out the rear) are integral to that design.

Anyways... this is dragging the thread completely off topic so I'm going to leave my comments at that. :)

it's true...we're going back towards everything being proprietary again. the mobos aren't ATX or mATX...or perhaps they are by dimensions, but the board layout is not. and even tower PSU in Lenovo desktops are proprietary and use non-standard wiring on the mobo power connector. it may be different on their workstations...I'm not 100% sure as I've never had a PSU fail on one of those, but have enough times on their ThinkCentres, particularly SFF rigs, and it's a royal PITA.
