Going to try the ThinkPhone

And just like that... so much has changed.

I got a couple emails today from Lenovo. The first stated that my order was cancelled at MY request for the phone. Immediately following that, I received another email stating that the device is 'no longer available'. So I called my sales rep who insists there's still stock and he doesn't know what happened. After some very annoying juggling between departments to determine what happened here, it's now been explained to me that the ThinkPhone has been discontinued and flagged as 'end of life'. This sounds incredibly suspicious given the phone was only released at the end of January this year.

I don't understand how a phone that's only 9 months old can be flagged as EoL. Not to mention, if the device is in stock, why can't they just sell me one?

After some further digging, I'm finding a host of consumers that are angry with Motorola because their post-sales update/support team is apparently terrible. With some users complaining they haven't received a single Android update in well over a year. So maybe this being cancelled is a dodged bullet for me? But either way, this was a very poor experience from an otherwise fantastic company. And I'd still like to know WTF happened to the ThinkPhone?
that is odd as it's in the current pre-black friday sale for $999.00.

Yeah Motorola became pretty lackluster when Lenovo bought it. Their phones are pretty run-of-the-mill with bad software support. Might as well buy whatever random Chinese brand phone with the same specs for less money.

To be honest, I thought ThinkPhone was going to be a sort of turning point for them, but I guess not. I was expecting it to be similar to something like the Blackberry Priv/Keyone/etc (the Android ones made by TCL was it?). But that would imply a lot of heavy lifting in the software end, to make Android secure/private/remotely manageable/etc.

I'm going to guess adoption was much worse than they hoped for so they're killing the idea before they lose more $$$...which is the wrong move I think. perhaps they should bundle phones with their higher end PC's and see what happens. LoL

There is still a pre-release amazon phone somewhere in the office. If sales are exceptionally bad they are going to drop a product. That Amazon phone was dropped really fast.

For a cell phone I think they also need to partner with retailers. If your not even on Rogers, Bell, Virgin's sites etc your exposure to the mass market is basically zero and only this week with your posts did I even know there was a Lenovo phone on the market in the first place. But most people I think liekly finance their phones and not being tied into those retailers is a huge market that your missing out on.
When it came out earlier this year, Unless I had some weird@$$ fevre-dream, I could swear I saw it available through Telus Mobility.

Thread revived! Apparently, after some confusion with my Lenovo rep, I can still get this. So I've re-requested the order and we'll sit and wait. Not sure what's going to happen with this, but I'm going to give it a try and see what fuckery I can get in to with it. I just hope I get continual Android updates with it and that the camera isn't TOO bad. But the extensive battery life, couple with solid build quality and a few nice-to-have features make this phone very appealing to me.

I was seriously thinking about getting this...but read one of the biggest features I was interested in is very buggy, the function where it turns into a desktop like device when connected to a monitor. I guess I will wait for the S24 to be announced so I can hopefully score a great deal on an S23. DeX mode is supposed to be quite functional. :)

My Huawei P10 had that kind of functionality, and strangely enough it used something very similar to the windows XP "Bliss" background screen. (XP bliss).

That's one feature that I never really saw the appeal for. If I need a desktop experience, I almost always have a windows device at hand.

but wouldn't it be cool / neat / convenient to have a single device that can provide our every computing need?

I don't doubt our mobile devices becoming a thin client gateway to virtual cloud PC's is the vendor wet dream.
