how will DDR5 help PC's?

-4800 CL-120 :)
Hahaha, yep.

Although I read somewhere that as RAM speed and capacity increased, the latency doesn't matter as much anymore, so whereas you had CL-7 or 9 IIRC in DDR3 on really good ram, it doesn't matter that the latency of DDR4 is around double that.
Though I'm really not knowledgeable enough with how it works to understand why or how that's the case and at what point latency becomes a problem even with increased speed. And if we're going to be honest, I just don't care enough to ever look deeper into it

Pretty much all of the "upgrades" to DDR have traded off looser timings for the sake of higher speed. It's usually a wash when compared to the higher end sticks of the previous version.

People get really worked up about CL yeah.

333mhz RAM with a CL of 2.5 = 15nS lag
1600mhz RAM with a CL of 7 = 8.7nS lag
3200mhz RAM with a CL of 12 = 7.5nS lag
4800mhz RAM with a CL of 20 = 8.3nS lag

Clock cycle will always win, unless there is a dramatic difference in latencies between ram speeds.
