Intel Ivy Bridge Launch Day Reviews Comment Thread

Thanks for the review MAC!

Interesting chip.
Not all gloom and doom I've been hearing rumors of elsewhere.
Not mind blowing as a desktop pc either, unless you are upgrading from something a few generations ago.
Should be interesting to see how well these will bench under LN2 & phase change.

Also looking forward to seeing how this plays out in notebook pc's, as I still haven't swapped for a new one yet.

The future looks bright!
Cant wait to see what Intel will bring us with Haswell.

edit: Just read the mobile preview, thanks for posting it Sky!

My thoughts to sum this launch up. Half the power consumption, double the heat. Expect a lower 24-7 overclock than you saw with SB with less voltage and less power consumption. The reason the oc is lower is because a lot more heat is generated by an IVB CPU. That said, even with a high-end water cooling setup, 5Ghz is very unlikely because the heat would be close to 100C load.

In the end, IVB wont see the speeds you can get with SB so the performance gained is cancelled out if ocing. However 24-7 ocers will probably buy for the power savings.

Interesting chip that's for sure. I love the fact that it has a lower power consumption but it's the end of the line for that socket and not any significant gains over a 2600k. Of course I'll be upgrading from a Q6600 so I'm sure anything would be an improvement at this point haha. As I still won't be upgrading for a while, Ivy Bridge-e or Haswell may be a better choice.

Great review.

I just want to point out that while reading other sites reviews you may find that some of them used between 1.40V and 1.52V when overclocking. What this should automatically tell you is that they did a poor job at reviewing since they did not attempt any stress testing at all. Short of using some very heavy duty custom water cooling setup, and they didn't, their chip would have throttled or simply locked up at those voltages due to high temperatures.

Great job HWC! I am very pleased to view and unbiased review of ivy. I'm most happy you compared it to the amd APU for integrated graphics comparison.

This makes me regret my Crosshair V much less, and gives me hope that piledriver won't get the snot kicked outta it by ivy as bad as bulldozer got beatup by sandy.
