Jack Layton dies at 61

this is very sad news. You could see it when he made the announcement though, he looked frail and old and not at all like himself. There was hope, just not much of it at that point.

my question now is what happens to the NDP. Jack Layton was that party, he got it to where it is today. Without him, I think the party will start to fall apart unless another strong leader steps in which I have yet to see from the NDP. I'm expecting the NDP and liberal party's to merge now, both are essentially fundamentally broken and need a fresh look. Give that party a strong leadership and they might actually be able to put up a fight in 4 years.

Man that is sad news. RIP Mr. Layton. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. I might have disagreed with everything he stood for, but I wouldnt have wished cancer on anyone.

The NDP are in deep shit, without him they are rudderless. Hopefully, a new leader will emerge PDQ....as one party being strong and all the rest being weak is NOT a good thing. Especially when the NDP were basically Canada's Conscience Party.

I am like many others here. His views did not match mine, but he did seem to be an amazing leader who fought for what he believed was right. Rest in peace.

RIP Jack.
I'm another who didn't agree with much of what he stood for but I do believe most politicians are decent people who think their vision is one that will change things for the better...

NDP is lost without his charisma... With a whole bunch of new MP's who can't walk and chew political bubble gum at the same time
If they get too much in the Quebec camp the rest of Canada will shun them and if they don't go to bed with Quebec they will pay the price there.
Fun times (not) ahead for the NDP leadership. :p

as someone who lives in toronto-danforth and is an active supporter of the ndp, i was very saddened to hear the news this morning. it was only a few days ago that i wrote to jack to express my support.. my thoughts are with olivia and mike

this will not happen.. there is no point in merging the more neoliberal liberal party with the ndp. the liberals are better off merging with the conservatives..
