Hey HWC
Is LED LCD monitors better or LCD monitors

Is the LED worth the extra $40-80?

Any recommended brands?

Being a user of a LED LCD I'll say this.

Colors are brighter but LED's fail in the sense of bright spots forming on the screen which sucks.

It really depends on the display. I absolutely love my LED backlit IPS display. But I am not sure if the extra brightness would benefit a TN panel as much.

Its not that LED is bad, its just got some bugs to work out. I was informed by the guys in IRC last night that 'most' of the LED screens being made right now use side-light LED, which is more or less the same as compact fluorescent currently in use with most LCD's. Really you want back-lit LED monitors, it allows for much greater contrast ratio, as the backlight can be turned off individually per pixel, giving you much blacker blacks and whiter whites versus the uniformity and always on that Compact Fluorescent provides.

In addition, as mentioned, you're probably better off (right now) to just buy an IPS monitor vs LED TN, because you'll notice better colours and contrast overall. A LED TN is still just a TN panel after all...
