Lenovo LOQ 15IRX9 Budget Gaming Laptop Mini Review

It's not AMD. :)

No, I haven't specifically checked the bios version against what's available on the website, but I have run the system software and it installed at least one bios update from within windows.

4800 CL 40 on 1 stick whats the other actually speced for I didn't catch it in the screen captures (and can be important with mix/match). Some MFG are really bad for providing garbage timings with frequencies that are otherwise what you would expect.

oh. 🤔 I immediately thought AMD because I've read about them having issues; not Intel...unless you fill all four DIMM slots on a desktop board. but that's the case for both AMD and Intel. so then, I would recommend getting the latest BIOS on there. that's something the last few generations of CPU / chipsets from both Intel and AMD have suffered from, glitches so you need to be constantly checking for BIOS refreshes. total opposite of the old days where you don't mess with it if it's not broken. >.<

I think it's also been the case that memory timings & speed can have a fairly significant effect on an AMD platform while Intel is/has been fairly agnostic when it comes to speed/timings.

Couple of extra points on the LOQ platform.....

Software:

It's most definitely not a "clean" install of windows. They might be forgiven for including Office since onedrive is fairly integral to a mobile windows install, but (IMO) having McAffee with its grubbing little fingers pre-installed is not something I (or any other consumer) really wants. If you want to include it as an option, make it an optional install package that can be easily removed/deleted. There were a couple of other third party crapware apps installed (Dropbox, and Linkedin "maybe"??? ), but thankfully nothing that required me to hunt down a stand-alone uninstaller.

Lenovo's control software (Vantage) seems functional, and offers decent enough power profile control either through the dashboard, or via Hotkeys (Fn + Q) as well as various "smart" settings for things like wifi "security" and an option to turn off certain programs when you launch a game (essentially a game mode to free up resources).

Most importantly there's an option to "Overclock GPU" which defaults to +100 GPU freq, and +200 Memory. Selecting the settings for this option reveals a couple of sliders which allow a max of +200hz on the GPU and up to +400 on the memory. It's not a huge range, but it is enough to make an observable difference in benchmarks.

The screen hasn't disappointed so far. Setting the profile with my colourmeter confirmed that they weren't exaggerating the 100% sRGB, and the 300+ Nits might not be suitable for outdoors use, but it's more than enough for indoor lighting.

So far the only real downside I've come across during testing is a fairly low battery life. Looks like it's only about 2.5hrs full screen 1080p video with the screen brightness maxed out and power profile on standard.

interesting that you can overclock the GPU. perhaps you can run some benchmarks with and without oc and advise temps, how it affects battery life and how quickly it throttles down because of temps?

First is No OC, second is default OC (+100 gpu +200 mem), third is adjusted OC (+150 GPU +200 Mem). All tests were done with the laptop performance profile set.

I tried bumping the mem up by another 100 while keeping the +150 on the GPU which resulted in a lower score than the third result. I also tried bumping the gpu all the way to +200 which resulted in artifacts and a failed test).

Is it a significant improvement? Not really, but it is measurable and tracks with increases to the GPU OC.

That said.... I'm more than happy with the results I'm seeing at the default OC settings (+100/+200) and don't really see the need to push it beyond that.

edit: Added Time Spy benchmarks for the same three gpu OC settings.

Colour profile for the 144hz monitor. (Calibrated with a SpyderX Pro)

Lenovo Generic PnP-1.icm

Each panel will be slightly different, but that's the profile mine spit out on the off chance that somebody with the laptop finds their way to this thread.

Can somebody do me a favour and verify that the link works for downloading?
