Microsoft announces Windows 10

I can confirm that it's also being put out as the ISO for the Media Creation Tool. (Using it currently).

Quite frankly, it feels like a much quicker and cleaner install. This is what we should have seen on release. :)

edit: As much as I hate to admit it, bringing in voice commands (however limited ATM) for the fresh install process is a neat trick, and also serves the purpose of showing Cortana doing something relatively useful. There are still some gaps during the install that Cortana can't help with but it's a start.

(Although I was a bit surprised when somebody was "talking" loudly upstairs while I was downstairs taking care of a second install...... ;) ).

1607 was 4.07GB, 1703 is down to 4.03GB (for the multi-edition ISO x64). Not a huge difference, but there definitely has been some code cleanup.

The latest Insider Preview that dropped yesterday also is strictly about cleanup of the code base before they start using it on Xbox & Mobile I guess.

I don't think it's strictly size that's been tightened up, it also feels a bit more efficient in that it's not crunching in the background for endless periods of time leaving us wondering if it was doing anything. I was doing two full installs at the same time so I was able to notice that it actually did the AMD video driver in the background during setup (the screen changed res) rather than waiting until after the user gets to the desktop.

Anyone who has put 1703 on, can you check something for me. When you right click the start menu, is there still an option for the control panel?

Thanks

I pin my control panel to my taskbar but that definitely seems like a silly thing to do. Everyone uses the control panel. Maybe 0.1% of people use Powershell.....

I can understand changing cmd into powershell but not control panel. But as long as there is a way to switch it back. Will have to look for a GPO setting or something to force it on all machines.

Oh man the damn Night Light setting that was introduced had me going lastnight. Was a complete WTF moment.
