Microsoft announces Windows 10

It's called the "Snipping Tool" and is a tool included from Windows 7 and above. It is generally faster for both taking screenshots and capturing specific portions of the screen.

Haven't updated it in a year. I prevented updates w/ group policy editor. I updated just prior the anniversary edition update, which AFAIK prevents that. This is just a Surface 3 Pro, not my main desktop. So I really don't care if it updates or not on its own. So I think I may go ahead and do an update.

I used local gp to have the OS notify me to download updates. It won't download until I hit the button. This setting persisted through my 1607 (Anniversary) update, which was done approximately a year ago.

With it set this way, the download is pending forever, until I initiate the download. Once they are downloaded though, you cannot circumvent installation of them.

If I see a pending update I don't like (weird KB update known to cause an issue), I wait a few days and then clear out the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder so that Windows update will re-gather the data. You can use this to wipe out downloads that have been procured and are currently pending install as well.

I haven't updated to Creator's Update (1703) yet, but I haven't seen anything to suggest this functionality has been removed. If anything, they may have reverted some of the local GP locks they placed on 1607. I may check 1703 in a VM just to verify this weekend.

Gotta bump this thread at least once every year..... ;)

The October 2018 Update is now live on in windows update.

Doesn't look like there's anything in there that I'm even slightly interested in, but going through the process on my laptop right now.....

edit: Nothing obviously broken. I'm hoping this will resolve the issue I've been having with my laptop's network card randomly deciding to not connect automatically on startup, and so far so good, but it was random so who knows.... :)

My previous taskbar snipping tool icon still works, but there's a note about it "moving" in the future, and there's now an icon in the settings which opens the new style app, which is a pain as it saves the bloody thing to the clipboard as opposed to just opening an action window with the snip in it.... :(
