new scam method...

These have been around for quite a few years up on Kijiji. The trick to spotting them quickly is to look for anything being listed at 1/4 of it's actual value, plus the palm trees in the background of the images often give them away. :)

You dont even need to look for the 1/4 value part. Up front cash scams are the oldest in the book. "Just send $xxx here as a security deposit" give me a break. Thats the guaranteed sign something is wrong.

There's a trick to spotting them? Looks entirely obvious to me. It amazes me that people fall for this. Here's an e-mail I received regarding a recent Craigslist ad:
Thanks for the mail. Yes i am interested, and I will like to buy. Its just that i will be moving to the US this week so phone lines have been disconnected, also i will like the items shipped with my UPS account to the address i am moving to. So if that is your last selling price, i will take it. You dont need to bother about shipping. I will ask UPS to come and pick it up at your location. You wont need to pay anything. And my company will be paying by bank transfer, or they can deposit the funds directly into your bank account. So let me know which you will prefer. Thanks, Mrs Gwen Blue.
How convenient! I can just give her my bank account info and UPS will pick up the items.. Maybe I should give her a copies of my passport and driver's license for good measure.

Don't forget your SIN.

theres little protection for online deals, if you dont pay attention. biggest bad deal buster is you, when thinking straight :).

It's surprising how many people fall for them. Desperate people often can't see beyond the savings, and/or for some reason think they're getting the deal of the century. Add in the "Ebay Protection", and a link to a fake "Ebay" website and it looks legit if you kinda squint...... ;)
