Hehe, I do know you can't say anything due to NDA's and stuff. But out of every place I find on the 'net, I feel your reviews appear to be some of the best and rather objective.

Thanks for taking the time to give such a great, no-nonsense review of computer tech.

Same can be said of holding off on the bigger res screen til you have the beefier GPU. This is one of those that, in my eyes.

No... not at all, Buy them at the same time. Until you know when your going to increase your res there is no point in getting a GPU for it..

I mean if you know your getting a new monitor in 2 months, wait till then to get the GPU and you have a chance to save some bucks / see if there are changes in the market.

If your not 100% sure then you could be spending more on a card that you don't need.
 
230$ seems pretty reasonable, that's well under a 100$ less than a GTX 970
 
$230 is much better than the $250 initial price being offered by NCIX, but I think the R9 280 still has more value. The 280 was on sell for $184 at NCIX less then two weeks ago.
 
The memory bus is fine for 1080p, and at $219.99 like I've seen for the Gigabyte ITX version at NCIX (Canada) the price is fine too.

What's not fine is the 2GB of RAM. For Green teamers the GTX 760 with 4GB is a better idea, even if it's not DX12, and for red teamers the R9 280/280x are also better with 3GB. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Shadow of Mordor seems to favour the 3GB in the R9 280x here with the high textures, so (if true) my opinion would be that 2GB is already not good enough for most 1080p gaming.

I understand that the new core has better texture compression, but I doubt it's good enough.....

Apologies for some of the missing info as well (I intended to do 1440P testing as well) but an SSD failure required a complete redo of all the benchmarks starting the day before yesterday. Ugh!

Assassins creed unity is 2gb if you play on mostly low settings. It will chew through vram on higher settings and resolution.
 
Just so we know, as there's no AMD reference cooled R9 285, which OEM card was tested? I check past reviews and don't find any R9 285 as ever being tested... odd? I'm sure it's just the lowly starting clock of 918Mhz, not the 950-970Mhz of most OEM R9 295 are sold with. While you might mention that the idle power is a little lower on the STIX because the fans turned off. A good bit of that power is attributed to the fan completely shutting down under the right conditions like your open test bench. I was surprised to see the OC STIX only offering 5% lower power with just the 9% improvement on those few chosen titles against a pedestrian R9 285. Also, where are the charts for Hitman that you used for getting the Load power figures? As wow, if the R9 285 bested the STIX by more than 5% in Hitman FpS, I'd say things aren't looking so "rosey" for this little Maxwell.<o:p></o:p>
