NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet Review Comment Thread

So I've had my Shield for a couple of weeks and I'm pretty impressed. I'm coming from an original Nexus 7 and the Shield tablet is blazing fast compared to it. It's maybe 4 mm wider, so it still is an easy one hand device for reading which has been my main tablet use for the last 18 months. Now that my controller arrived today, I can see that my usage pattern is going to change drastically. The wireless controller is slick and easy to set up and use. And being able to Gamestream from my gamer upstairs is badass. My only complaint is that I actually have to start Steam and disable Family View on Steam manually before I can play some games in my library (but that's my fault, not Gamestream's. I've got it set up so my 5 year old can only see his Lego library and a couple other family friendly games).

I'm going to have to grab a mini-HDMI adapter or cable and try this out in console mode. I can easily see it replacing my PS3 in the living room which I use for playing media and a couple of exclusive games.

Oh, and the sound is roughly 400% better than my Nexus 7. The speakers are actually useable and provide a pretty decent range too.

I guess he did :bleh:

Did you get the controller as well?

I did, and a 64 GB microSD card. The cover was still out of stock when I ordered the controller, that will have to wait until NCIX gets some stock.

My wireless N modem/router upstairs is from Shaw and 2.4 GHz only, so I had an Asus RT-N12 in the closet I put in the living room for a better wireless connection. Nvidia recommends a dual-band N router for best results. I only tried The Lego Movie game last night with my little guy, it was butter smooth. I see Titanfall is one of the supported games so I'll try that tonight and see how it goes.

I did have a problem getting my tablet to connect to my computer and had to input the IP manually, but then I realized there was another software update released last week. This solved it being able to find my main PC on the network. Because the whole house is wired, the routing through the network was probably confusing it. Tablet > Asus Router > Switch > Shaw Router > PC.

So far it's a dam cool device. I'm glad I replaced my Nexus 7. If it works as well with the HDMI hooked up to my receiver, I'll be selling off the HTPC parts I've been collecting.

Shield owners should check this recall out:
RECALL!!! NVIDIA Recalling Bad Batch Of Shield Tablets - - Android in Canada Blog
I’ve got some pretty bad news for any of you who bought the NVIDIA Shield Tablet between July 2014 and July 2015. NVIDIA has announced a voluntary recall for devices sold during this period as they have discovered an issue with that batch of batteries. According to the release, the faulty batteries may overheat to the point of becoming a fire hazard! - See more at: RECALL!!! NVIDIA Recalling Bad Batch Of Shield Tablets - - Android in Canada Blog

Yeah, they emailed me directly. I went through the recall process on the website for a new unit today, its supposed to be 2-4 weeks for a new one. I'm guessing there will be a lot of refurb units available in a couple months with replacement batteries.
