Rants etc.....

Sadly the same 'good experience' can't be said of the food over there :S

Whats wrong with the food?

There are good and bad places everywhere.. My 1 and only (so far) trip across the Atlantic found me hunting for a decent place to eat.. Most places were rubbish but a few were superb.. Just have to know where to go.

I've been to UK a fair few times and generally I've found ok to great places.. Couple of bad ones but as said above..

Heh... Starting out by having my morning eggs cooked in a literal pool of mutton grease by the mess hall cooks in Kinloss wasn't a great start...... ;)

You clearly didnt know the right cooks in the military. Between them, maintainers and your loggies that is how you get all the good stuff over seas, including the sauce :)

Besides, werent you just holed up in a Hotel for your whole career anyways?

Well, not really... we always made it out to as many of the local pubs / bars / gasthofs as we could fit into our busy schedule. (Of course that's after we booked into our fancy hotels.... ;) ).

I will say though that every place we went on TD seemed the same... low lights, questionable clientelle (they let us in didn't they???? ;) ), and smelling of stale beer..... :)

As far as knowing the cooks goes... that's how they cooked everything at the Kinloss mess.... the grills were actually on a bit of an incline in order to create what was essentially a mutton fat deep fryer. In fact I attempted to make myself some relatively ungreasy eggs myself and was waylaid by one of the staff who then proceeded to demonstrate how they did it. (Nothing like greasy eggs sliding down your throat after a night of NBA at the SGT's mess...... :) ).

Military base in the arse end of Scotland doesn't count..:D

This is the country who's recent culinary achievements include deep fried mars (and other chocolate) bars.. and the "crunchy bite" pizza battered and deep fried..

Not to say you can't get good food there.. but really.

Local radio ad claiming that "Your alternator and starter are the life blood of your automobile in the winter" (paraphrased) yet using an audio clip of a vehicle turning over but not catching.....

Ummmmm..... if it's turning over fine then it's neither the alternator nor the starter that's the issue... if your mechanics can't diagnose that within 1 second then I'll go elsewhere....... ;)

hehe that has to be a joke
the two biggest things are fuel and spark if your car is turning over then it most likely is one of those two things, well in older vehicles that would be the first places to look lhell I used to drive my old V8 Vega with a toasted starter ( only worked when car was cold because the starter was touching the header and would get to hot after driving) and an totaled alternator.
I just had to push start my car to start it ( of course had to charge the battery over night) I drove like that for two weeks until I got my paycheck to fix the problems.

Now my rant is I cannot figure out how to turn off the dam Knoicking sound when my Gmail account receives new mail. it took me until this morning to realize that the sound is coming from my dam samsung phone kept waking me up last night grr

Heh... I had a malibu station wagon (major boat!!! :) ) that seemed to have a dead spot on the starter. Nothing that a good calibrated fonzi tap on the starter body wouldn't resolve. :)

Edit: As far as the ad goes... not a joke, but that's what happens when you leave the marketing dept to create advertising content without input from the mechanics / engineers. :)

Rants

When we went overseas the food was indicative of the lifestyle, I thought.

Hawaii was basically the same as home except a lot of seafood, which I love... We stayed at Waikiki and there was this little breakfast place, that's all they served, that were open weird hours but always had a lineup around the corner.

We jumped in one day when the lineup was only a few people at the time. I had a tuna omelette and strawberry crepes for dessert( in a breakfast place) ???? but it was awesome!

Costa Rica had a lot of food carts, we tended to stay away from those, though they did smell great! We went on a volcano tour. 94 at the ocean and 74 at the base of the volcano. Never got to see it, clouds moved in.

Got to swim in a hot spring, which was nice. A small hotel had the best lunch when we stopped for a meal.

The Netherlands had a lot of small health food restaurants, with juices made daily,...

Quite a varied menu there I found. There was a small Italian place that was nothing to look at, but I had their seafood linguini and it was simply delicious!!!

I tend to look at places when walking around, if there's often a lineup I will try to get in there at another time when it's not as busy.

In Cuba I caught some small fish and the resort cooked them up for us!!!

Well I was more poking fun at GB and Ireland since you're Irish (and I lived in England, spent time in Scotland and Ireland). 'English (or british, irish, scottish, welsh, etc)' food being known as greasy, heavy, and generally unappetizing. Sure I had some decent Indian, Japanese and such in London, but I found it generally really hit and miss. The midlands were generally pretty poor though I did have some spectacular roasted lamb.

That being said, it was more a joke, I'm sure when you find the right places you can eat good food anywhere. Italian foods generally considered a 'good' cuisine, but I had more bad meals in Rome than any other city. And I'm sure if you look hard enough, you can get a bad meal in France. It hasn't happened to me yet, but if someone wants to foot the bill, I can go back to France and investigate further :D
