Rants etc.....

So my rant for today is this hot and humid weather. Can't even step into the sunshine without feeling like I am an ant under a microscope. I am still sweaty even in being an air conditioned environment. My other rant for today is for people who don't watch where they are driving or running red lights (had numerous close calls before and even today).
 
My Rant is Idiots that are running around panicking telling Security ( there is a guy with a gun). after a little bit of investigating and talking to the people involved including the Police I find out that there was an off duty corrections officer that cornered a guy that had just stolen a woman's necklace and the corrections officer is saying to the guy that if he tries anything he will shoot him while he is on his " Cell phone " with the police. with in about 20 minutes they whole place is whispering things like there was a huge struggle and shots were fired.

Ok here's a rant.
String Timmers.
Yes, really.. string timmers. I used to have a "crappy" (inexpensive) Black and Decker 14 or 16V cordless timmer 5 or 6 years ago. It was slow, and needed 3 batteries to do the lawn, but it worked. No mess, no fuss. You could buy string pre-wound in cassettes cheaply on amazon.. it was great until the batteries finally gave up.
So I bought a nice Stihl trimmer. Gas powered, way too much power (I have to look up how to drop the throttle or something) but the damn string. It comes wound loose in a pack.. and already pre-friggin-knotted. Seriously, you buy an item light years better than the previous, only to find yourself winding the string by hand, trying to unknot 30M of plastic cord, and wondering how everything went wrong.
 
Here is my rent today : Refusal to innovate!

Hear me out on this one. I hate any professional area where products are stuck in the past because people seems "ok" to endure what is already there. Often, there could be obvious standards or small modifications that could make the life of everyone easier but since we're all "dealing with it", it never happens.

Example: Electricity. Whenever you want to change a light fixture, it's often a puzzle to fit everything in the socket, having it correctly wired and making the thing cleanly and securely fixed. I'm speaking for any non-handy person. Why not have a simple standard "push and turn" socket that could fit anything?

Example #2: Kitchen containers. Why are there always crude or sharp edges. Just make full rounded edges. Clearly people who design those never had to clean one by hand.

Example #3: Car radios. I'll simply say this. Car manufacturer are stuck in a special space-time continuum that seems to make them catch up technology 10 years before the rest of the population. The bluetooth module in my car costs around $150 to replace. The best part, pairing music and calls is worse than my $99 Bose wireless speaker. And the car one doesn't even need a battery.

Having said all that, like I said, it doesn't "ruin" anything for anyone. But there is place for innovation, yet products are stuck in the past. Makes me angry. Technology and life in general could be so much better, but we live in a world where we can't have nice things because REASONS.
 
Gut and replace main floor bathroom. We have a basement bathroom that has a shower we can use, but my wife will have a very hard time since she can't do stairs well at all. We are making it handicap accessible too. I am being my own general contractor, I'm a little nervous as I usually do everything myself. My plumbing skills suck and they are replacing all the existing water pipes in the house because they are cast iron as well, far beyond my skill set. Not sure on the flooring yet. Kills me how much this stuff costs now a days. Our bathroom is tiny, basically a 4' X 12' box with a 48" shower sunk into one wall. Hoping to keep it under 5 figures, already pushing that number and I haven't started gutting it yet....

Yeah, even without replacing existing water pipes our upstairs bathroom reno which included removal of an outside window and pretty much everything but replacing the gyprock was somewhere around $9K 5 years ago.

Doesn't come cheap.

Are you doing any of the work yourself?
 
I'm doing the subfloor/floor, all walls, all framing, dropping ceiling 1 1/2' with drywall, and trim/door. Plumber is framing in enclosed shower unit, installing toilet and vanity and pipes in basement, first floor and second floor. He is changing water feeds only in upstairs 2pc bathroom. Only trade I am using is a plumber. The electrical I need is to move 3 sockets to the right literally 2' each and add a ceiling fan, baby stuff.

Sure I am forgetting something, lol.....
