Recommendations Audio ??

I, personally, did not care for the AudioEngine stuff. I had a pair of AudioEngine 2's and they sounded way to flat to me. But I understand some people look for that.

Hi, what are the folks at the forum recommending these days for 2.1 DAC systems?

Do they include a DAC ?
No I don't believe those ones do. I was going to clarify that in your requirements. Do you really need the DAC in the speakers? Perhaps that is your preference, but I think you'd have more speaker options if your DAC was separate. There are more knowledgeable speaker folks on here than me though.

I have Edifiers running off my headphone DAC/Amp and have no complaints for my listening/gaming requirements.

I would think that if you had good quality speakers, having the DAC separate means you could change that out in the future if you wanted to for some reason, keeping the good speakers. I'm not sure if there is any benefit to having the DAC built into the speakers, other than less items on your desk?

If you can use optical in for the speakers, is a DAC really doing anything for you?

I'm not an audiophile by any means, but my understanding is that optical (assuming you've got full 192/24 bit) is optical regardless of the source.

It starts to get complicated once you try to do multi-channel, but it looks like your intention is to go 2.1.

Most of the higher end powered speaker lines have models which allow for optical in as well has having sub-out ports so that you can slave in a sub.

You wouldn't use a DAC for powered speakers. Just for bookshelves / non-powered monitors.
