Thanks for the review. I've read a lot of reviews about the UDM both prior to and post release. General consensus is that its still Alpha, and should have never left EA. Your review parrots the same...

I feel Ubiquiti has become a victim of its own success at this point. A lack of consensus on direction (look at their product stack!) with their products, and growing too fast has lead to some cracks showing.

The scary part is that there really isnt a comparable competitor. The AIO solutions from companies (like ASUS) leave a LOT to be desired. I dont think its much to ask for a prosumer grade product, that isnt junk or expandable (in a true networking sense) for the 300 bucks ASUS wants for a router today.

For APs, you could always look @ used Ruckus gear (just make sure it can run Unleashed) from eBay if you are ok w/ that. I'm extremely happy w/ my Ruckus R500. But for switches / gateways you are mostly right. Well besides PfSense for a gateway, but it scares people for some reason :p.

I'm on NanoHD's (x2) for my mesh, running off a USW-8-150w that splits the rest of the hardwired items.

I'm not scared of pfSense. I desperately want to build one. I just dont have old hardware lying around to repurpose, aslo I dont want to pay the 'large' cost for the hardware new, and I havnt had luck finding a good price on used hardware (because the add-in NIC is killer to buy new)...

FWIW I bought a Ruckus R720 and it's shit. It's garbage with my iPhones and their support seems worse than Ubiquiti. I had better speeds on an AC66U. Look at this: https://forums.ruckuswireless.com/r...reply-list[settings][page]=3#topic-reply-list

At the cost of one R720 I can get two NanoHD that will obliterate the Ruckus in coverage and speed. Once I discovered that the SFP+ uplink from the UDMP to my switch was causing slow wifi (RJ45 is fine but only 1 gig) I accept this bug (which may or may never be fixed) to allow my UniFi APs to do their thing.

I have a UDMP and still running EA firmware because it's stable enough and I can't be arsed to take my whole network down to upgrade it to the newest version. After you configure your rules and test to make sure your stuff works who really looks at firewall logs? I do miss pfsense features A LOT, but it's worth not having to hear my router's CPU fan kick up to 100% when having sustained 100 MB/s downloads.

My issue is I have no idea if my blocking/privacy rules are working, or if it is just an illusion. Otherwise, I'd agree with you.

Forgot to mention one big positive.... For lack of a better term, load balancing on the UDM is excellent. If I started downloading a game on Steam, or utorrent traffic maxed out the up/down connection, Telus equipment would crap out, producing buffering, delays in loading pages, etc.
