Just watched a summation of a republican rebate, who has time or stomach to actually watch one, but we are so screwed.

The topics, the cheers, the discussion, the fact that one of those people could end up leading the US, the country with the biggest army, short of china, scares the bejesus out of me. Though I am consoled that the US is slowly, well relatively anyways, tearing itself apart with debt.

Am I wrong, I mean Harper scares me too but I think hes at least sane. But Obama's not impressing people, and these candidates scare me because they have a real chance of dethroning him. Is this is irrational? Or should I start running now?

I do have to say while the candidates were scary enough, the crowd.........

Disclaimer, this thread is not about politics, this is about fear and sanity. And yes, I think we have seen the start of the collapse of the USA, thats a different thread. And I'm not quite sure if I spelled bejesus correctly.

Americans need to cut spending, and perhaps bring in a VAT like the HST.

And that is not so they can spend more, but to start paying off debt. No matter where you are on the political spectrum, you simply cannot spend more money than you bring in. If you have debt, you need to bring in more money than you spend. Some folks on both sides of the border have been advocating slashing taxes in order to starve the government into submission to cut programs. Good luck with that. You might need to postpone that plan until after the baby boomers have all died off.

The problem isn't social programs per se but the abuse of them and the spending on wars. Just look up the trillions on wars and the constant printing of money that is destroying the economy and ultimately, the society.

People call ones who explain rationally and matter-of-fact, crazy and label them with derogatory insults such as extremist and tinfoil hat wearers but they're the only ones willing to be blunt and give the facts.

Economics 101, if you just print fiat money which is basically worthless non-stop, your currency will eventually turn to sh**. It's guaranteed and whether it happens today, tomorrow, 5 yrs from now or 15, it does devalue and a load of other problems will result. The only reason the U.S. is keeping afloat is because of the investment in the American economy by China and the way the economies are tied together. You can make fun all you want with your 'tinfoil hat' accusations but when the economies are tied together in this globalization scheme, it can't end well.

It's especially alarming when most people can only whine about Obamy and who the Republicans will choose. It's great for them to have the populace preoccupied with that stuff.

Anything that happens in the US has repercutions up here in Canada.

However, we do have a level headed PM at the helm currently and i'm very happy about that. Financial crisis calls for a conservative approach via keeping current tax rates(not jacking them)cutting spendings and re-evaluating various costly programs. Otherwise, dont rock the boat, keep things stable. Stability will bring economic growth on it's own with companies coming on board knowing we are a stable place to establish ourselves unlike the volatile US environement. The companies themselves will not necesseraly pay much in income tax however if a company hires 100 people, those are 100 people that will pay income tax, are not receiving EI/social assistance anymore and will be spending money in their local economy.

I know for a fact that every governement agency/ministry had an official request to submit 2 budget scenarios lately(i work at the Feds in stats/finance). 1 with 5% cuts and another with 10% cuts for the next fiscal years. They are considering both option depending on how the current year will go.

One thing we should really be worried however is the influx of illegal immigrants from the US, fleeing their debts... apparently it's starting to happen in Alberta/Sask, not sure how serious it is yet.

Hey Borg, although I don't agree with much of your opinion, I enjoy reading them when you avoid stuff like the above.

You yourself have admitted to having views 'outside of the norm.' Those who present views radically different from the general populace need to have a tough skin, and need to take extra care when discussing those views. Its hard to be different.

If you are truly trying to convince people to stand up for change that you believe in, you need to ignore the 'tinfoil hat' comments. Otherwise, people get their backs up and ignore any useful stuff you have to suggest. True, other posters need to try to keep the 'tinfoil hat' comments to themselves too, but if you are a small but vocal minority you need to take extra care (if you really care about changing peoples' opinion...otherwise you come across as simply trying to find ways to call people 'stupid')
