Xonar Essence STX Comment thread

Yep, it looks like I'll have to hold off my HDAV plans and wait for this one. Details on release date and price if you have it?

Would the HD595's then be a great pairing with this card since I heard those need their own headphone amp. And would the 595's be the ultimate ~$300 headphones or is there something better at that price point?

I have a set of HD-595's and they do not require a headphone amplifer as they are lower impedance unless there is two verisons of this model. There are many great sets and I would think much debate as to what would be the best set for that price point. A can head site would be the place to ask.

My PC350 headphones have 150ohms impedance, and I saw a reviews suggesting that an amp would be needed, but my Auzen Prelude has no trouble driving them. Honestly, if I ran them at 100% volume, I can't believe it'd be good for my ears in the long-term.

For $300, I'd see if I you can score an AKG-K701. They go for approx $263US on amazon.com, so you should be able to get one for $300. They are the next best things after the HD650.

Hmm well I already have the prelude so nevermind on the 595's then... AKG-K701 you say.. so those require a headphone amp and are better then the 595's then?

I would say the 150ohms is about the mid point where I amplifier would or would not be needed. Many would say any impedance over ~150 would require a amplifier and any heapdhones under 150 impedance would not.
You could use a headphone amplifier for those cans but there would be varying opinion on if you needed one or not. Hope this helps.
The Essence has three software settable ranges for heapdhones
1. Normal Gain
2. High Gain
3. Extra High Gain

This card can easily drive any headphones out there with this amplifier chip.:punk:
