Any Opinions on Bambu P1S vs P2S?

Hi, All:

I've been mulling over an upgrade to my 3D printer--an Ender 3 V2 that I've had for 5 or so years. The BLTouch now fails every third or fourth print, requiring a reset, and I feel like I'm always having to tweak and re-tweak things to get a reasonable print.

I've heard good things about the useability of the Bambu printers. I'm not a huge fan of closed ecosystems, but given that my outspoken goal is to mess about less and just get some prints done, I'm probably not going to be too interested in moving beyond the ecosystem anyway.

I see that a P1S with the original AMS unit can now be had for about $699, while the P2S with AMS2 combo is $1049--which feels quite pricey for the amount I print. I could forgo the AMS, I suppose, but I like the idea of being able to slice in a transition layer with my supports to allow for easier removal. Ideally, I'd love a dual head machine, but that's way outside my price range.

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone has experience with both the P1S and the P2S and wants to share their thoughts on the two.

Thanks!

Did you look @ the A1 w/ AMS? It is only $500. It is a really capable printer for the price. It would still be a massive upgrade over any Ender. If you swap nozzles / hotends. The A1/P2S use the new style that is quite a bit easier to swap. Although the P1S is still a pretty quick swap. AMS Lite is pretty much hassle free. There is no way for it to jam besides filament coming off the roll. But pay attention when loading filament and it shouldn't be an issue.

I believe the AMS2 is more hands off versus the AMS1. And AMS2 has drying, but only when you aren't printing. But even w/ the improvements to AMS I'm not sure the $350 would be worth it to me.

Thanks, Lowfat.

I did take a look at the A1, but I figured that it would probably still print relatively slowly, as another bed-slinger--or is that no longer the case? It's been a while since I paid much attention to the fancy new stuff in the 3d printing world. I do also like that the P-series is enclosed. I definitely had times where I'd have warping of big prints on the bed because my ender couldn't keep them warm enough at the edges.

Yeah--the price difference is what I'm choking on. I mean, the screen upgrade looks really nice, but I don't know how necessary (that is to say how much it improves functionality) it is. And I'd read that the AMS2 has a built-in dryer, which is appealing, but again I'm struggling to figure out if that's really worth it...

A1 is probably 3-4x faster than an Ender 3. Definitely not slow. For single colour prints, internet says the P1S is probably 10-25% faster than an A1. For multi-colour prints, A1 is quite a bit faster as it only has to retract a couple cm versus the all the way back to the AMS.

I personally don't believe the P2S is worth the extra $350 (plus tax, so pretty much an extra $400). Yes the touch screen is nice to have but honestly I seldom used the Bambu Touch when I had it installed, 95% of the time I just used the interface on my PC for controls.

As far as the heating goes.... it's a bit weird that you can't heat while printing (with the AMS2), but also keep in mind that for proper heating all of the filament types in the AMS have to be the same type (can't heat PLA to PETG temps, and using PLA temps for PETG probably isn't very effective.)

If you grab a P1S and want a heated AMS there's an aftermarket Sunlu product for the OG AMS.... (I've got one and it's easy to install)

Oh, wow. That's still a lot faster. Thanks for the numbers! I really didn't expect anything that speed from a bed slinger.

That's a great point that I never thought of, sswilson, on all of the materials having to be the same material--which would likely never be the case for me, anyway. I'm less interested in multicolour printing than I am potentially doing single-colour prints with easier-to-remove supports. Mind you, I'm sure I'll find an excuse to play with multiple colours, as well

Thanks, as well for your thoughts on the touchscreen. Seeing as I'm essentially driving a rusty Pinto at the moment, and even upgrading to a new Corolla would be night and day, one can't help but stare longingly at the fancy sportscar beside it a bit. Lol. Out of curiousity, when you're controlling it from your PC, are you doing that wired or wirelessly?

There is neither USB nor Ethernet for connection so the only option is wireless.

Oh, fair enough. I'm not sure where I got the impression that ethernet was an option.

I'm definitely leaning toward the P1S with the original AMS, but I've got one more question for your thoughts: I understand that Bambu does an anniversary sale, and I'm tempted to wait to see if the P1S gets any cheaper. I'm a bit worried, though, that they'll simply sell out of existing inventory by then, and I'll have to pony up the extra money for a P2S (though I guess it might go on sale for a bit cheaper, too...)

Any thoughts?

If the P1S combo is still sitting at $699 I have my doubts it will drop any further. That's been the "sale" price for quite some time, and is relatively cheap when compared to other options.
