Is anyone tempted to move to Linux after W10 support ends?

Hello,

As you know, W10 support ends in 2025.

My rig does not meet the requirements of W11 and while you can always force it I feel it will be a constant faff to keep it updated. With the release of the Steam Deck, Linux has certainly become a "doable" alternative as a gaming OS.

Of course, this will mean some games (especially outside of Steam) would be "lost".

Is anyone entertaining the idea or are you simply planning on upgrading your hardware when the time comes?

Big no for me. I use linux for pretty much every device in my home except my main PC + laptop. But all without a GUI. Every linux GUI I've tried just isn't intuitive. And I don't want to have to deal w/ compatibility if I wanted to launch a game or software that only runs naively in Windows.

My main ring is always windows, but I extend the use of my others computers (laptops, htpc) with linux mint.

Even the wife had a easy switch from windows to linux on her old laptop.

I love Linux but I use windows just because of gaming before I had a half-decent PC for gaming I used Linux even though I used to have challenges with some things, like Nvidia and Linux drivers or when I used to have a sound card having to get help with Building drivers that worked in Linux but that was also part of the fun in Linux if I could do that now to play games that I enjoy I definitely would go back but there is still many issues with gaming the games I like to play on Linux.
nowadays some of the Linux distros and getting a little bloated so for myself, I probably would spend many hours removing this I would never use. I think my all-time fav distro was Opensuse, I did totally fluke out and was able to do the Arch Linux thing but when I tried again a second time couldn't get it to work lol

I think most people will have upgraded their computers by 2025 to something that does support Windows 11.

The requirements are not that extreme, a Ryzen 2000 (~2018) or an Intel 8th Gen (~2017). Those systems are going on 5yr old already which is the typical time to lifecycle a device.

If windows 11 is the same crap it is today when W10 support end, unless they get some kind of windows 12 that is good out, I might go dual boot. Do everything in linux and boot windows from time to time when I want to game. I guess it's still early to know what's going to happen, maybe we'll all end up with Macbook!

Win 10 will be unoffically supported for another 3-5 years or windows 12 might not be utterly awful.
