Hello fellow Canucks, I alluded to this in the "what have you purchased recently thread" that I would start a dedicated thread in regards to a recent purchase. That being a pair of Klipsch The Fives powered bookshelf speakers. While being a recent purchase it was long in the works. I've been looking at speakers for my desktop PC set up for years. I wanted to replace my 5.1 Altec Lansing set which has been in use for over 15 years now.
So after my birthday family dinner a month ago my son gift's me some cash and suggests I put it towards some PC speakers! He must have caught sight over my shoulder at some point looking at some? So I thank him with a smile and tell him respectfully that it won't pay for what I'd like so I'd have to put some dough into it as well. Then to top that off my wife says the same....WOOT! So thoughts of which Edifiers or other potential brands start coursing through my mind. When it comes to Audio/video/PC I research the shit out of it and that's what I did!!
I also have this nasty habit of going over budget...hehehehe
So what was limited to $400ish started ballooning to $750 then upwards to $1200 with financial miracles required. I found that what I was looking at was not what I needed/wanted nor would it be what I could settle for! To better understand my thinking I don't have unlimited finances but I have a serious passion for Audio/Video. I consider myself an audiophile and try to wrestle every penny I have for the best quality I can get! Edifier's had my attention then research showed me Vanatoo, Peachtree M25, Q Acoustic M20, Kanto 6's and then the Tuk's and Totem Kin Play all the while knowing of The Fives out of reach existence at almost $1500 CDN. Of course there are more expensive powered bookshelf speakers out there but my family needs to eat
During my research I was a click away from getting the Vanatoo T.O.E and the Kanto Tuk's but for various reasons it just wasn't a perfect fit for me. Then low and behold Amazon.ca had the price on The Fives at $1050ish CDN. I thought it was too good to be true, what's the hidden catch and I was leery. I then had a gander at Amazon.com and they were on sale at %34 off from $799 USD to just over $500ish USD.....hmmm do I take a chance and over the course of a couple days I almost did a couple of times but I didn't. Then I said fuck it I'm getting too stressed about the whole endeavor and punched the order button. The cost of getting The Fives from Amazon.com after shipping, taxes and duties came in at about $874Cdn! SIGN ME UP and fingers crossed! They arrived a day early and I've had some time over the last three days to form an opinion....I did good I did and my fucking word did I do good
As a snob free audiophile I have that end of things covered with some great headphones/DAC and a home theatre set up that recreates the intent of the artist. With the Fives let alone any other small powered bookshelf speaker I wasn't expecting on par performance with floor standing towers and what not but glory be in the nearfield, what The Fives can do is astounding!!!!
My above comments were written in part over the last couple of days, it's late on a Friday night and work beacons in five hours.
To be continued.......
