Help needed to OC i7 950

Use whatever offset will give you just enough voltage to match the one you needed under load when you were using a fixed voltage. Because vdroop will take quite a bit of voltage away, you'll need to set it high enough to compensate. If you don't know what this voltage is yet, do a couple tests...

Help needed to OC i7 950

In regards to your question about HT and current games, it has been shown to not help performance. The CPU offset setting is on the same line you enter in the CPU voltage (just highlight that field and it'll show you how to use an offset instead of a fixed voltage setting).

Help needed to OC i7 950

I'm glad that helped. What I meant when I said your temps were a little high is that you should either stop there or upgrade your cooler if you want more overclocking. I disable HT because it requires more power, generates more heat, and I don't use any applications that use more than four...

    My new $1000 gaming rig

Corsair Dominator RAM is also a good choice (and almost the same price). Also, no one has mentioned the P6X58D-E motherboard, but that might work well for your price point.

    1 TB drive

If it helps, I have one Black Edition and one Barracuda 7200.12 and have nothing bad to say about either.

Help needed to OC i7 950

I don't know how you are doing this, but typically you find your target base clock and corresponding QPI voltage while keeping the memory and CPU on low multipliers to leave them out of the equation. Then you move onto memory and finally the CPU itself. Also, you don't need to worry about...

GeForce GTX 580 - Coming this December

+1 on that (although we can dream right)

    480 gtx sc

Yeah that GPU is a little underpowered for the full Aero experience.

    Vdroop and power phase question

Alright, so the voltage spikes aren't that dangerous after all then? Oh also one last question; I set my northbridge (or what's left of it in the i7 architecture anyway) to 1.3v (1.1v stock) when I started overclocking. Should I bother trying to lower that? I've seen some people using around...

    Vdroop and power phase question

Hi everyone, I just got an i7 a week or so ago and started doing some overclocking recently. I managed to stabilize 4.2 GHz at 200 base and 21x multiplier (on a 950) at 1.3v flat. The only problem was when I disabled load line calibration and xtreme phase full power mode on my P6X58D-E. I left...

    New i7 or wait

Alright, thanks a bunch for the tips you guys. Looks like I should do the upgrade but wait out on the GPU then. It's too bad, I had just settled on that Gigabyte SOC version of the 470, but it would probably be more prudent to stick with the 260 for 2-6 months just in case.

    New i7 or wait

Wow, thanks for that tip. I wasn't a huge ASUS fan and didn't know about the e series. I don't even need that extra ethernet port or heat pipe. Thanks for saving me $60!

E version of what? And I was actually thinking V8 for the cooler. I might just take your advice and wait though, it seems more reasonable.

    New i7 or wait

Well, I think I am getting very, very good prices (mostly because everything is still under warranty and I'm selling to neighbors). Mobo; going from eVGA 750i FTW (selling $150) to P6X58D for $300 GPU; selling one GTX 260 for $130, hopefully the other for the same price, and a 9500 GT for $40...

    New i7 or wait

I don't need it to last forever, but if waiting six months for SB and a new GPU is worthwhile, I'm down.

Isn't Sandy Bridge coming in March though? That's six months, not a year right?

    New i7 or wait

I'm trying to build a pretty future-proof PC, which is why I'm saying it might be using 12 GB eventually. Six gigs should be fine now, but I know that on 4 GB certain games get memory-starved, so six won't be enough forever. I agree on hexacore i7's and gaming, thanks for confirming. As for...

    New i7 or wait

Hey everyone, I built my current system (Q6700 @ 3.8 and GTX 260 sli) in December 08, and now have a buyer for my parts. I'm considering upgrading to an i7 950 (I found it at a store for $250 with tax) and pairing that with a GTX 470, an ASUS P6X58D, and 6 GB of Corsair Core i7 Dominator RAM and...
