ASUS GTX 980 Matrix Platinum Review Comment Thread

Honestly, I'm not impressed when a review says "this card is not for people who want to stay within the limits, but we will only test it within the limits." Why spend all this time lording over this card for premium over-clocking and then go on to say you're not going to do any of that? You talk about it being great for something you haven't even fully put to the test?

Seems like a great card, but I agree with the above.

Basically its not worth anyone buying over the strix, unless you don't care about maintaining a warranty. If you don't care about warranty, then it may be worth the premium. Not sure because it hasn't been tested to see what that will gain. I suspect it will net significant gains with extreme cooling, but what would it gain if sticking with its own air cooler?

We never said it was great at extreme overclocking.

the Matrix is left to putter around at stock speeds but if you have the necessary abilities, the sky could be the limit.

the possibilities truly are endless for those who push the limits.

The GTX 980 Matrix has the potential to be one of the most impressive graphics cards

It may even be a record setter.

they have what may be the best overclocker-friendly graphics card around

We indicated potential but also went on to state that these ultra high end features hinge on voiding the warranty. These modifications can literally be made to any card with the right BIOS and a bit of knowledge with the same end result. The Matrix simplifies this by giving users the tools right there in front of them rather than having them look for PCB traces to jump.

The award wasn't even given for this card's overclocking capabilities but rather the fact that ASUS has given a set of workable features for a community that has been left out in the cold by NVIDIA.

I'm going to give the benefit of doubt here: It is possible that Sky isnt allowed to hard mod the card, say if he has to return it to ASUS.

Honestly, nothing about this is particularly impressive but it should be mentioned again that we didn’t utilize every tool that ASUS left at our disposal. Our experience also goes to show how the Matrix represents a particularly poor value for anyone who wants a simple plug-and-play solution. Extreme overclockers should have a field-day with it though.

And...the caveat.

I'm not sure anyone outside AKG has experience with LN2 overclocking, either. And its nothing to sneeze at. Plus the variance between this card and the next under LN2 could be massive. (Didnt we have a review a while ago where someone OC'd with LN2?)

I agree it seems...'gimmicky' for ASUS to provide all these features with a beefed up air cooler. Why not provide a water block or LN2 mod stock, if that is the target market of this card? Maybe we'll get some feedback from the staff about these things?

I have two cards here. One that was being used for this primary review and another that I am voltage modding, reporting on and will be returned to ASUS. It had a wonky cooler so ASUS gave me permission to do with it what I wanted before returning it.

The modded card will be used for an article but due to such massive variance in overclocking overhead between samples when v-modded, I couldn't have included that as part of the conclusion anyways.

I wonder if Shamino's voltage tool for the Strix and Classified boards will work w/ the Matrix? I would guess it would.

I've taken the 980 Strix up to 1.4V w/o soldering the LN2 bridge (it will go much much higher). Past 1.6GHz but since my VRMs use stock cooling it ran too hot for comfort.

His tool will work BUT the frequencies in GPU Tweak are capped unless the voltage modifications are done.

That is silly that they cap the clockspeed when using their software. When you could just load up one of the other Afterburner/Rivatuner apps. Definitely no caps w/ PrecisionX v4.2.1.

Remember, Precision 5-series software has the "official" Maxwell support while the 4-series doesn't. Not that it makes much difference.
