Best razor?

shaving for what...35 years or so. straight razors,5 blades, electric multi headed blah blah blah.

best way, by far, is a cheap ass orange Bic. soften up your stubble with a hot cloth first or right after a shower, a 20 cent Bic is the champ(with foam lather of course). don't waste your time being cool with a straight blade or get sucked into those manly man super multi bladed bullshit gizmos.

believe me, all those advertisements you watch are aimed right at your man weaknesses. chicks will not be clinging to you, and you will NOT look like those guys in the ads after you shave with a Ferrari shaped 5 bladed shiny piece of plastic, that you paid 5x what its worth.

I'm not going after a nice shaver because I want to look cool, but because I get shavor burn and irritation if I use a shitty razor. Investing in a more expensive safety razor will give me a closer shave (albeit it will take a while to get used to) and will also not cost me much more in the long run.

$8 for a 10 pack of feather razors. One razor lasts a week - 10 weeks for $8, not bad. That plus some proraso shave soap ($8) that will last a while, and some pre/post proraso ($12) which will also last a while...

The only expensive part is buying the shaving supplies, like a good badger hair brush and Merkur HD which will cost a pretty penny, but even then these things are designed to last 20+ years... so it definitely makes more sense than buying say an uber expensive graphics card nowadays.

Just like to say thanks for the help, found a good Vancouver based razor store here:

Vancouver Modern Barbershop - Traditional Straight Razor Shaves - Precision Men's Haircuts - Vancouver Shave Shop

I just use cheap razors when I do shave, a 10 pack of bic for a few bucks is worth it and gets the job done. I wouldn't mind trying a pro glide however but I haven't shaved lately, just trimmed my beard with some trimmers.

Straight razor as well, the Shick one with the battery in it. I find electrics dont give me a close enough shave and have to shave more often with on.

A straight razor, unless I'm mistaken, is only the kind with the single blade barbers use (or used to at least).

I use a Merkur HD safety razor. Gives a nice close shave, fast and easy to use once you get used to it. The nice thing about it is you can shave even if your facial hair is fairly long, it just cuts easily through the hair (need to clean it more often obv) but it doesn't try to rip your face off like the cartridge razors.

I use a good badger and soap and its fantastic!

alright, time to make an update..

Pulled the trigger, dropped some cash on a nice safety razor, brush, blades, stand, and shaving soap.
not seen in picture is my proraso shaving soap which comes in a convenient little bowl shaped package and was only $8 :)

I call my new shaving set the United Nations - (bad joke) - the brush is from England, the Blades are from Japan, the Razor is from Germany, and the soap is from Italy.

Bought a Merkur long handled HD (heavy duty) Razor, a fairly basic Edwin Jagger badger brush with a little stand for it, and Feather Razor blades. Anyone in Van city who is interested, I bought from "MASC skincare" and "Momentum Grooming" in Yaletown, excellent barber stores. I am not endorsing them on their behalf, I'm just a customer. The soap you can also find at shoppers drug mart now.

I have not shaved with them yet, but will tomorrow! I am praying for a nice wet shave :thumb:

Congrats. Just remember two things for a successful shave: no pressure (if you need pressure, your blade is dull or your angle is wrong), and stretch your skin as you shave; you'll get a smoother shave, and you won't cut yourself.

Jesus, wtf do you guys need to spend hundreds of doallrs on shaving your face for.

Jesus, wtf do you guys need to spend hundreds of dollars on playing video games for.

see what I did there?

But to answer that question:

To get a close shave, not get razor burn or irritation, the blades are cheaper and sharper - it will pay for itself, and because it feels cool.

I shaved today, since I didn't want to wait until tomorrow. The "easy spots" aka, the spots that are easy to stretch and get at are BABY smooth... My old cartridge doesn't come anywhere close. I didn't use aftershave or anything and there's no irritation at all. But, the tougher areas are going to be a challenge. I suspect it will take some time to get it just right. It's a hell of a lot different in technique than cartridge razors.
