Completed DIY Networked Attached Storage

Looking around at the market, it appears that the only readily available (and it's not really) case to build a NAS in these days is a Fractal Define R5.

Edit: Looks like the Node 304 would be a good candidate as well.

And of course...... Node 304 ordered. Might as well do it right.

I think these are the popular ones currently: https://www.jonsbo.com/en/product/ComputerCase/NASMotherboardSeries.html

I have a Node 304, with a collection of all my old HDDs in it and my old 2500k. Sits in storage though. It's not exactly the most convenient case to swap HDDs in and out of. Wiring is a bit of a pain too as the drives sit face-to-face, so the ports don't align across all 6 (only 3+3).

Yeah, they're the new shiny cases, but while they're a lot smaller, they require either SFX or Flex PSUs and don't cool anywhere near as well. They're also a bit more expensive.

I'm only going to have 4 drives so there will only be one of them oriented opposite to the others.

edit: and that should officially be it for spending my election's canada mad money.

So far it's been the mobo + memory, SN850, PCIe slot fan controller (hoping I won't need this), Node 304, and a pair of SFP modules. Throw in $1100 worth of spinning storage and we're getting awfully close to what I got from my recent work. :)

The meshify 2 is the way to go. That’s what I’m using.

  • 3.5"/2.5" Universal drive mounts

    6 included, 14 positions total + 1 Multibracket

So it ships with mounts for up to 6 but you can buy extra mounts if you want?

I'm seeing a Fractal theme here in the desktop cases which seem to support more than just a couple of 3.5" drives. Are they the only mainstream case manufacturer providing 3.5" support?

edit: Still working on printing off 4 of those caddies to see if they'd stack inside the GD09.

Yes. I just bought mine last week. It came with 6 HD trays. I also added an extra fan at the bottom front. Keeps everything nice and cool. 2x18TB Red Pro, 2x2TB Samsung 990 Pro drives.

I had gotten a themaltake core v71 few years ago, it comes with 8 hdd plastic cages ( I though of trying my hand a modding the case and making a backplane to make them hot swappable, but never got around to seeing if that was possible), i though i would regret my decision by not going with one of those huge fractal cases, but so far it's served me well.
