e8400 safe OCs??

Im puting together a gaming rig with an e8400 core2 on a asus p5q-E mobo p45northbridge and 10r southbridge. Thinking scythe ninja with a 120mm sony fan for cpu cooling and for now stock asus heatpipe/heatsink chipset cooling. Any ideas what sorta numbers i should expect out of this?? I am only really looking for a stable cool OC nothing that is gonna really tax my parts as i want to keep this around for a while. the ram is 1066ddr g.skill 5-5-5-15 i think are the timinigs not sure how great it is for ocing might try some mushkin if i dont have much luck with it. Any comments suggestions experiences??? please help :D
 
I like my GSkill PC2-8000. They're running at 1066 5-5-5-15 right now. For some quality cooling check out a Vendetta 2, Xigmatek S1283 (Either with a bolt through kit) or perhaps a TRUE-120. They're all around the top for cooling, even though the TRUE can get a bit pricy. With any of those I'd guess you should be able to get around 4.0GHz
 
Their are no guarentees when it comes to OC'ing up to and beyond 4 GHZ, all Chips are individual when it comes to the required Voltage and Temperatures. With that said, my E8400 is an old C1 Stepping, its been running at 4.05 Ghz for just about a year now at vCore 1.45 (set in BIOS) equates to about 1.38v under foal Benching load, as far as HSF, really just about any decent HSF on the market out their is more than adequate for this Chip, even my Zalman keeps it well below 60c under full Prime Load.
Good luck...I'll be retiring my E8400 next week for an I7 920. Well, retiring it to a "second Rig"...
 
As rj said 4.05 is very common. I had mine there for a bit but I didn't like the heat so I backed off a bit and barely noticed any difference except for 15C cooler temps. I've had zero problems with it in 3 1/2 months running 24/7 folding,gaming,encoding ect. I wish I would have saved some money on this 1066 ram though as I barely scratch what it is able to do on air (If I had water cooling maybe then the 1066 would be warranted).
 
As most people have stated 4.0GHz is a pretty safe bet I had my E8400 stable at 4.25GHz, but I had trouble keeping my motherboard stable at or above a 500Mhz FSB.

To say the least, the E0 stepping overclocks to 4.0ghz with little to no effort. However the C0 stepping is a different story, some people have gotten it to 4.0ghz and past that without much trouble, some users had to play deeply with their settings, increasing voltages.

I've been hearing that most of the E8400 sold nowadays are all E0 steppings.

+1 - some of the Voltage requirements I've been seeing for a 4 Ghz OC are amazing with that EO Chip. I did have mine Prime Stable for about an hour at 4.25Ghz but had to jack the Voltage up to 1.55v..did a Bench then backed it down.
 
I have just finished putting together my new E8400 rig and for the 5 minutes of playing in the bios, I've managed to reach 533x8 1:1 @ 1.36v 100% Orthos Stable. I will continue tweaking later tonight. I'm hoping to hit 533x8.5 with less than 1.4v.
