I don't know if anyone on this forum has ever had a bios update go bad on an ASUS mobo,I had the first one for me go bad and learnt more then I thought I knew.

I had always watched a different bios updating video's on youtube and that way I would know how to do recover the bios if it went wrong, all the video's I have ever seen always say that usb stick must be formatted in Fat32 and that's it.

Well I went and got the bios file loaded it onto the usb stick and tried to recover the bios but after many attempt's I decided to go on the net and googling why ASUS Bios Flashbaack wasn't working and thankfully a youtube video was up and it showed the guy using the Bios Flashback feature and also mentioned something I have never heard any youtuber mention until that time and it was that the usb stick must also be converted to MBR GPT will not work.

The first try after converting the usb stick to MBR it worked right away the first time,I know for sure I have used the update feature to update the bios with a usb stick that was Fat32 GPT and when the youtubers are showing video's I doubt they bricked a mobo's bios just to do the video and were maybe just updating with the Flashback feature I don't know.

I'm sure lot's on this forum may know abut this but I'm sure some won't.

i will never use this feature again, killed a Asus WS Sage x299 board instant brick, if i didnt have a micro solder workstation id been out $899-$1200 back in day.

Was it the update that killed your mobo or the Flashback feature, with all mobo's updating the bios is a risk and thankfully for me I have only had this happen once and I was able to recover.

the flashback i had a update for the board loaded up the Bios. set it to flash and it sat there blinking over 24hrs. i gave up shut it off. booted it up 00 post code >< ordered a new Bios pre flashed to latest available desoldered old one soldered new one back on it now lives as my Test bench for hardware from various places.

I used bios flashback on asrock and gigabyte motherboards, no problem on my side.

Sorry to hear that it went bad 😖

But yeah, I keep some old 1gb and 4gb usb flash drive, formatted to fat32 mbr for those rare need.

I sheepishly have to admit that I haven't done a BIOS update on my 5900x setup. It was a fairly new BIOS on the ASUS board when bought it because I got into the platform late in its life, but still, I should likely update. I got the system up and running and everything has been working so I didn't mess with it!

I have done ASUS updates in the past though and they went fine. Not a good feeling at all when something as low level as the BIOS update doesn't work. Glad you got it shorted out @wade7575 and thanks for passing on the info.

I wasn't feeling to good when the green light started to flash then stopped almost right away, the only thing I was thinking is this thing is F****ed and I should throw out a Window to the concrete below because I had of some guys saying that bios flashback doesn't always work.

I blame the youtubers to a certain degree because I also feel if your going to post a video and these were well know guys that had done a lot of video's not one to ever mention oh ya and by the way folks make sure that usb stick is in MBR or she ain't gonna work.

I put some of the blame on me to for not going to the ASUS site but then again I have tried that in the past and you look for hours to find something that is extremely well hidden, but for some reason when I searched google this time it came up with the right result on the ASUS site.

Yes I believe I bookmarked or downloaded the instructions of ASUS... just to be on the safe side!
